reaction between acyl chlorides and ammonia - addition / elimination   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Ethanoyl chloride is taken as a typical acyl chloride.
Ethanoyl chloride reacts violently with a cold concentrated solution of ammonia.
The first stage (the addition stage of the reaction) involves a nucleophilic attack on the fairly positive carbon atom by the lone pair on the nitrogen atom in the ammonia.

 ACETAMIDE (ETHANAMIDE)
dehydration of ammonium ethanoate; ammonia on ethanoyl chloride, ethanoic anhydride, or ethyl ethanoate.
Acetamide is used as a solvent, plasticizer, and a wetting and penetrating agent and in lacquers, soldering flux and explosives.
Amide is obtained by reaction of an acid chloride, acid anhydride, or ester with an amine.

Types of Chemical Reaction, Definitions and Examples
Methanol and butanoyl chloride ---> methyl butanoate and hydrogen chloride
Methanol and ethanoyl chloride ---> methyl ethanoate and hydrogen chloride
CH This example is the reverse of the earlier esterification reaction, and is usually carried out in the presence of potassium or sodium hydroxide, which then react with the acid formed to give the salt of the acid.

 Acetyl Chloride
Acetyl Chloride is an energetic acetylating agent, particularly in combination with aluminium chloride, for compounds that are difficult to acetylate.
Acetyl chloride is a clear, corrosive and fuming liquid; melting point of -112 C, boiling point of 51-52 C, Refractive Index of 1.3890.
Acetyl chloride is widely used as an acetylating agent in the synthesis of fine chemicals, agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Explaining the reaction between acyl chlorides and ammonia - addition / elimination
The ethanoyl chloride molecule is also planar (flat) around that carbon atom, and that leaves plenty of room for a nucleophile to attack either from above or below the plane of the molecule.
As the lone pair on the nitrogen approaches the fairly positive carbon in the ethanoyl chloride, it moves to form a bond with it.
The route involving the formation of hydrogen chloride is exactly in line with the water or alcohol mechanisms, but you do need to remember to react the HCl with excess ammonia.

The Term Used To Describe Fibres Of Cellulose Ethanoate (acetate) Wherein Between 74% And 92% Of The Hydroxyl Groups Of The Original Cellulose Are Ethanoylated (acetylated).
Purified Cellulose Is Ethanoylated (acetylated) By Ethanoic Anhydride (acetic Anhydride) In The Presence Of A Catalyst (such As Sulphuric Acid Or Perchloric Acid) In A Solvent Such As Dichloromethane (methylene Chloride) Or Ethanoic (acetic) Acid.
When The Hydrolysis Of Primary Cellulose Ethanoate (acetate) Is Allowed To Proceed Until Approximately 54% Of Combined Ethanoic (acetic) Acid Remains In The Product, The Cellulose Acetate Is Soluble In Propanone (acetone) And Is Sometimes Known As Acetone-soluble Cellulose Acetate.
