  Ethel Lina White Summary
Ethel Lina White belongs ineluctably to what has been called derisively "The Had-I-But-Known School" of mystery fiction, with its endangered heroine, its closed and threatening circle (which in her best novel is not an old dark house but a train), its association of terror with the commonplace, and its resolution in martial pairing.
An interesting exception is White's next novel, Put Out the Light (1931), where the author tells the reader in a preface that because the victim is the most dominant character in the novel, she is retained as long as possible.
To the usual perils of stabbing, shooting, and strangling are now added the fangs of a hungry lion; the heroine survives all with fortitude, and the last scene of the novel, the villain having been unmasked, is the heroine's recognition of her longlost love.

Ethel Barrymore, Elsa Lanchester, and George Brent co-star, while Dorothy McGuire expertly captures the dilemma of the mute Helen Capel.
Adapted from an Ethel Lina White novel, Robert Siodmak's The Spiral Staircase (1946) is an effectively chilling Gothic film noir with an ominous, expressionistic atmosphere.
With its questionable group of residents and servants, headed by Ethel Barrymore's crusty matriarch, the Warren household is already as twisted as the title stairs even before they suspect that a murderer is in the house.

1917 Kromo Gravure Trading Cards Photo ID Guide Comparing 3 Different Types
I have acquired these on at least three occasions, but never with the box or case they were issued in, if in fact they were issued in one.
These also measure 2-1/8" X 3-7/16", however the difference is the rounded corners on the inside edges of the white borders.
They measure slightly smaller at 1-15/16" X 3-5/16", and at first I thought they may be trimmed, however the edges are so clean that to trim them would have taken quite a bit of work for very little reward.
