Topic: Ethel Shutta

Ethel Shutta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ethel Shutta (pronounced "shoo-tay") (1 December 1896 – 5 February 1976) was an American actress and singer, who came to prominence through her performances on Jack Benny's radio show, her role in the early Eddie Cantor musical Whoopee!
In 1929 she married band-leader George Olsen, with whom she had two children (her son George attended school with Hal Prince, who was later to cast Ethel in Follies).
Shutta came back to Broadway in 1963 with Jennie, which starred Mary Martin.

 FOLLIES - Everything Was Possible
Ethel Shutta would do “Broadway Baby” once in rehearsal, and then sit down, thinking she was finished.
D'Orsay was difficult and Shutta seems to have had a bit of a rivalry with her.
Ethel Shutta comes across as an old pro who brooked no crap, knew her lines and blocking and knew to show up and stop the show every performance.

She was not a child star or performer on Broadway as a child, nor did she sing the song "Broadway Baby" in the original Broadway production of FOLLIES, she wasn't in it.
Hattie is the character who sings Broadway Baby in FOLLIES and the part was originated by the sublime Ethel Shutta.
Shutta's performance was much more "right on the money" than Stritch's fine, but "schtickified" performance of the song Broadway Baby in FOLLIES IN CONCERT some 15 years later.

If this was the wave of the future in 1971, some fretted, would the musical ever again have anything positive to say about anything?
Among other things, Follies is about ghosts, and there are many in Chapin's book: Smith, Collins, Nelson, McCarty, Shutta, Bennett, and on and on.
He repeats facts, sometimes a couple of pages apart; he uses "Ethel" indiscriminately, so we have to guess whether he means Shutta or fellow cast member Ethel Barrymore Colt; he shifts tense from past to present and back, sometimes confusingly.

Rising star Michael Bennett, who assisted the pair on a smaller scale with their previous year's "Company", was co-director of the show, which opened on April 4, 1971 for a run of 522 performances.
Its star-packed original cast included Alexis Smith (Phyllis), Dorothy Collins (Sally), Gene Nelson (Buddy), John McMartin (Ben), "Once on This Island" director Graciela Daniele (Young Vanessa), Ethel Barrymore Colt (Christine), Ethel Shutta (Hattie), Yvonne De Carlo (Carlotta), Harvey Evans (Young Buddy) and future "A Little Night Music" lead Victoria Mallory (Young Heidi).
The show's themes of American decay and loss of dreams were enough to land it on the covers of most of the nation's top magazines, but audiences used to happier shows were--at the time--reticent of the subject matter.

Now head of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization, Chapin has written a beautiful new book about the experience, filled with lots of pictures, lots of dish, lots of fits, fights, feuds and egos, as Sondheim himself put it.
For those who haven’t seen one of the many reincarnations since then, including a disappointing 2001 Broadway revival, Follies takes it name from the opulent early 20th-century revues that featured dancers, songs, comedians and a parade of beautiful girls.
The book also includes many interesting rarities, including many of the songs cut during tryouts, and custom jobs, like the numbers written for Ethel Merman when she took over the leading role in Dolly; or a tune written for Robert Preston in the film of Mame.
