King Ethelbert of Wessex was a son of Ethelwulf of Wessex and was born in around 835 AD.
He succeeded his brother, Ethelbald of Wessex, as King of Wessex in 860, but died without issue in about 865.
They had also penetrated as far as Winchester in Ethelbert's early reign.

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that he attempted at one stage to wrest the position of Bretwalda from Ceawlin of Wessex but was unsuccessful.
Augustine arrived in Canterbury in 597, and tradition has it that he baptized Ethelbert only a few days after landing in Kent, although a letter from Gregory to Berthe suggests that it cannot have happened before 601.
Ethelbert was later canonised for his role in restoring Christianity to England.

Gregory of Tours, who was a close acquaintance of Queen Ingoberg (the mother of Ethelbert's wife Berthe), twice calls him simply "a man of Kent", indicating that he was not king at the time Gregory's History of the Franks was written, and that Ethelbert more likely became king closer to 590.
Augustine landed on the Isle of Thanet in 597, and Ethelbert first met him under an oak tree, in accordance with his belief that he could thus dispel any magic the Christians might attempt.
Ethelbert also established a written code of laws for Kent, the earliest in any Anglo-Saxon kingdom, which provided for the protection of the Church and instituted a complex system of fines.

King Ethelbert or Æþelberht of Wessex (Means Magnificent Noble) was a son of Ethelwulf of Wessex and was born in around 835 AD.
His reign saw a Danish plundering of Kent and raids in Northumbria, both led by Ragnar Lodbrok.
He was buried at Sherborne Abbey in Dorset.

In 851 Athelwulf defeated a Danish army at the battle of Oakley while his eldest son Althelstan fought and beat the Danes at sea off the coast of Kent in what is believed to be the first naval battle.
The eldest son of Ethelwulf of Wessex, Æthelbald was born in around 834 and became King of Wessex after forcing his father to abdicate.
After the death of his father Ethelwulf in 858 Ethelbert ruled Kent, Surrey, Sussex, and Essex, and he reunited them with Wessex when in 860 he succeeded his brother Æthelbald.
