The amino pattern closely matched that of collagen, with the exception of considerably reduced glutamic and aspartic acid levels; these amino acids are typically lost during sample preparation when calcium carbonate is present, as was the case in the ground sample (Halpine 1992).
Another portion of the ground was saponified in 10% KOH in methanol, the solution neutralized and then extracted twice with ether.
Ether extracts were combined, evaporated to dryness, redissolved in a small amount of methylene chloride, and methylated with 10 μl dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal (Pierce Chemical Co.).

 William Robert Ware
Several sources, including the architect himself, credit Ware with the design of the Ether Monument in Boston's Public Garden, and at least one source attributes the design of First Church to Ware.
A further indication of the importance of Ware's design contributions to the partnership is that the firm's most original work was completed in its early years while Ware's influence was strongest.
The office teaching provided by the firm was an important undertaking, for both Ware and Van Brunt, and was influenced by their experiences in Hunt's New York office.
