  Light Isotropy- Theory and Experiment
The entrained ether theory presumes that the ether is dragged by materials which move through it, in much the same way that a physical gas or fluid is dragged by solids moving through it.
This theory, therefore, presumes that the ether in the earth’s atmosphere is being dragged by the earth.
It is often misinterpreted that the ballistic theory presumes a corpuscular character of light and that the ether theory presumes a wave character of light.

Background of the concept of ether
According to his last view, the density gradient of ether is necessary to rush bodies from denser areas of ether to less dense ones.
It is impossible to suppose, that the structure of ether is similar to the gas structure, in which molecules are in the state of a random motion, because in such a medium a shear oscillation during a wavelength attenuates to the quantity, less, than 1/500 of the initial amplitude.
Whatever difficulties we encountered during our attempts to work out a well-grounded notion of ether structure, it is doubtless, that interplanetary and cosmic space is not empty, it is occupied by a material substance or body, the most extensive and, very likely, the most homogeneous we have ever known.

The story of ether, or aether, is familar to anyone who has studied the history of science and the seminal tale from the heroic age of physics of the Michelson-Morley experiment to establish whether or not light travels through a mysterious medium that fills space -- the ether.
If the theory of a stationary ether through which the earth moved were correct, then pointing one arm of the apparatus in the direction of the earth's travel through space would produce a displacement of the observed pattern of interference fringes amounting to 0.4 of a fringe width.
His theory, which quickly attained widespread currency and a wide measure of support made two key assumptions; first that the speed of light is constant, regardless of the speed of the source, and second, that there is no ether at absolute rest with respect to moving objects such as the earth.

Luminiferous aether - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the late 19th century the luminiferous aether ("light-bearing aether"), or ether, was a substance postulated to be the medium for the propagation of light.
Einstein's later general theory of relativity (1916) also attributed tangible physical properties to space in order to agree with Ernst Mach's idea that all forms of motion should be "relative", and the general theory arguably implemented its gravitational field as an updated, relativistic, nonparticulate aether (i.e.
Electroweak theory and quantum field theory suggest that light could appear to move at different speeds in different directions in a medium such as a dense gas; the speed of light would be sensitive to motion relative to an ether and the refractive index of the medium.

The Ether Gauge Theory   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
Ether Gauge Physics, the Ether Gauge Theory (EGT), is often referred to as a Modified Lorentz Ether Theory (MLET) inasmuch as it may be viewed as a modified and much extended version of H. Lorentz's ether based concepts.
Pauli [2] says the ether had to be given up "...not only because it turned out to be unobservable, but because it became superfluous as an element of mathematical formalism..." But it has always been rather meaningless to talk of light as a transverse wave without having something to do the waving.
The ether external to the particle will have an increased density that will be distributed approximately inversely proportional to the distance from the center of the particle.

Ether and the Theory of Relativity
This theory also called the theory of the stationary luminiferous ether moreover found a strong support in an experiment which is also of fundamental importance in the special theory of relativity, the experiment of Fizeau, from which one was obliged to infer that the luminiferous ether does not take part in the movements of bodies.
According to this theory the metrical qualities of the continuum of space-time differ in the environment of different points of space-time, and are partly conditioned by the matter existing outside of the territory under consideration.
The ether of the general theory of relativity is transmuted conceptually into the ether of Lorentz if we substitute constants for the functions of space which describe the former, disregarding the causes which condition its state.

In the inter-galactic space, the density of gravitational ether is minimal, with maximums occurring in the centre of fl holes.
Nothing remained of all the properties of the ether except that for which it was invented, i.e., its ability to transmit electromagnetic waves.
Einstein's ether, instead, cannot be thought of but in four dimensions, which means that time must be included in the structure of "space" itself (which is in fact more properly called space-time).

 [No title]
According to the general theory of relativity space without ether is unthinkable; for in such space there not only wonld be no propagation of light, but also no possibility of existence for standards of space and time (measuring-rods and clocks), nor therefore any space-time intervals in the physical sense.
This denial of the innate motion of ether, aka, carrier of electromagetic wave energy, as well as the rejection of rotation in the parameters for defining Special theory were done as a judgment call on the part of the investigator without proof of validity.
The 5th quality of the undetectability of the ether appears to me to be known in physics as a standing wave, where energy (mass) is held between the nodes, yet there is NO detectable energy (mass).

Motivation for ether theory   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
It is a theory from last century, rejected and replaced by two of the most successful theories we have ever had in science - special and general relativity.
My motivation for the development of this ether theory was in no way discomfort with general relativity or preference for old, pre-relativistic simplicity.
These theories are not Einstein-causal on the fundamental level (because they make the same predictions as quantum theory, their relativistic versions are Einstein-causal on the phenomenological level - observers cannot use the violations of Einstein causality to transfer signals faster than light).

Russ - i will agree that the ether drag was an attempt to save the ether - but it didn't need saving since (as I keep saying and you and your immature friend continue to ignor or misinterpret) SR did not depend upon the existence of an ether or any properties of space whatsoever.
Quotes such as: "What is fundamentally new in the ether of the general theory of relativity as opposed to the ether of Lorentz...." are obviously talking about different concepts of what an "ether" might be.

Dark Matter's Rival: Ether Theory Challenges "Invisible Mass"
Summary A concept abandoned in the 19th century is being revived by a physicist as an alternative to dark matter, despite recent announcements of proof of the theoretical substance.
Starkman's conception of ether, however, is very different from the outmoded 19th-century one—he thinks that ether affects the pull of gravity, not the movement of light waves.
The next phase in his research will be to perform more detailed calculations to make sure his ether theory matches up with empirical evidence, such as the motion of planets within the solar system.

Lorentz ether theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In physics, what is nowadays called Lorentz ether theory (or "LET"), proposed that light was transmitted through a light medium in which the motion of objects did not cause dragging effects, but did cause objects to contract in their direction of motion (Fitzgerald-Lorentz contraction).
This was used as an explanation of why the Michelson-Morley experiment had failed to detect an aether drag effect.
However, many physicists consider such explanations to be archaic and overly interpretative, and prefer to distance special relativity from LET by describing Einstein's special theory in terms of the relationships of the Minkowski metric - which in turn leads some to adhere to Minkowski's geometric interpretation.
