  Hubs
Ethernet hubs and repeaters operate at the Physical Layer of the OSI Reference model and are defined by IEEE 802.3c/d.
Hubs are a form of repeater for an Ethernet LAN which has multiple ports (they are sometimes also known as "multi-port repeaters" or "active star networks").
The hub is not able to recognise the addresses in the header of a frame, and therefore is unable to identify which port to send to.

Ethernet hub - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An Ethernet hub or concentrator is a device for connecting multiple twisted pair or fibre optic Ethernet devices together, making them act as a single segment.
Ethernet hubs are also responsible for forwarding a jam signal to all ports if it detects a collision.
Hubs also often come with a BNC and/or AUI connector to allow connection to legacy 10BASE2 or 10BASE5 network segments.

Ethernet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ethernet was originally based on the idea of computers communicating over a shared coaxial cable acting as a broadcast transmission medium.
Despite the huge changes in Ethernet from a thick coaxial cable bus running at 10 Mbit/s to point-to-point links running at 1 Gbit/s and beyond, the different variants remain essentially the same from the programmer's point of view and are easily interconnected using readily available inexpensive hardware.
The Ethernet Version 2 or Ethernet II frame, the so-called DIX frame (named after DEC, Intel, and Xerox); this is the most common today, as it is often used directly by the Internet Protocol.

What is the Difference Between a Hub and a Switch?
Although hubs and switches both glue the PCs in a network together, a switch is more expensive and a network built with switches is generally considered faster than one built with hubs.
When a hub receives a packet (chunk) of data (a frame in Ethernet lingo) at one of its ports from a PC on the network, it transmits (repeats) the packet to all of its ports and, thus, to all of the other PCs on the network.
Because they have to operate at half duplex (data flows one way at a time) and a hub retransmits data from one PC to all of the PCs, the maximum bandwidth is 100 Mhz and that bandwidth is shared by all of the PC's connected to the hub.

Cisco - Fast Ethernet Hub or Ethernet Switch?
If you presently have a 10-Mbps Ethernet hub and your network is exhibiting signs of congestion, either a Fast Ethernet hub or an Ethernet switch can immediately and dramatically improve network performance.
The primary advantages of Fast Ethernet hubs for improv-ing LAN performance are their low cost and ease of instal-lation and use.
Every work-station, server, or other hub connected to a main hub is considered to be within the same network segment, commonly called a “collision domain.” For example, if you connect four 12-port hubs, all 48 attached devices are in the same collision domain, and all of them share the same bandwidth.

All Ethernet hubs and switches are basically designed to facilitate the interconnection of multiple devices on an Ethernet network.
The downside is that each Ethernet device has to wait for its turn to 'talk' to the hub, increasing the likelihood of message collisions; therefore, real-time operation is jeopardized and determinism is difficult.
