Use of IEEE Assigned Type Field
The length and EtherType interpretations of this field are mutually exclusive.
Requests for multiple EtherType Fields by the same applicant will not be granted unless the applicaant certifies that they are for unrelated purposes.
In particular, only one new EtherType Field is necessary to limit reception of a new protocol or protocol family to the intended class of devices.

ng_etf(4) - Ethertype filtering netgraph node type
etf node type multiplexes and filters data between hooks on the basis of the ethertype found in an ethernet header, presumed to be in the first 14 bytes of the data.
If a packet has an ethertype that matches one of the values configured into the node, it must have arrived in on the hook for which that value was configured, otherwise it will be discarded.
Sets the a new ethertype filter into the node and specifies the hook to and from which packets of that type should use.

EtherType - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
EtherType is a field in the Ethernet networking standard.
It is used to indicate which protocol is being transported in an Ethernet frame.
With the advent of the IEEE 802 suite of standards, the SNAP header, with the IEEE 802.2 LLC header, is used to transmit the EtherType of the packet for IEEE 802 networks other than Ethernet, as well as for non-IEEE networks that use the IEEE 802.2 LLC header, such as FDDI.

EtherType: The Ethernet Type Field and Values
EtherType is a field in the Ethernet frame, which indicates the protocol used in the data field of the frame.
When the value of this field is greater than or equal to 1536 decimal (equal to 0600 hexadecimal) the EtherType Field indicates the nature of the MAC client protocol (EtherType interpretation).
EtherType Field is administrated by the IEEE RAC EtherType Field Approval Authority for review and approval.

With all the respect for wikipedia, I prefer a reference to IEEE 802.1Q and IEEE 802.1D in which the Ethertype is considered part of the options/shims.
This is hardware friendly, since inserting or removing the shim does not change the 32 bit alignment of what follows.
IMHO TRILL should adopt a shim header that is N*32 including the Ethertype = TRILL or 16 + M*32 excluding the Ethertype.

The original Xerox Version 1 Ethernet network standard had a 16 bit lengthfield, although the maximum length of a packet was 1500 bytes.
This length field was soon re-used in the Version 2 Ethernetprotocol as a sub-protocol label field called the EtherType, with the convention that values between 0 and 1500indicated the use of the original Ethernet format with a length field, but higher values indicated the use of the new frameformat with an EtherType sub-protocol identifier.
With the advent of the IEEE 802 suite of standards, the SNAP header is now sometimes used to transmit the EtherType of the packet forstandards such as the Internet Protocol that originally used theearlier Ethernet standard.

The Ethertype is analogous to the SAPs in the 802.3 frame in that it specifies the memory buffer in which to place this frame.
Since the maximum frame size in Ethernet is 1518 bytes, there is no point in overlapping between Ethertypes and lengths.
Following the Ethertype are 46 to 1,500 bytes of data, generally consisting of upper layer headers such as TCP/IP or IPX and then the actual user data.

 PC/TCP Packet Driver Specification
The link-layer demultiplexing information is passed via the type and typelen fields, but values and interpretation depend on the class of packet driver (and thus on the media in use).
Developers should note that, on many networks and protocol families, the byte-ordering of 16-bit quantities on the network is opposite to the native byte-order of the PC.
The problem is that the "ethertype" of Blue Book packets is in bytes 12 and 13 of the header, and in 802.3 the corresponding bytes are interpreted as a length.

EtherType Allocation The EtherType field is very limited, so that allocations are made solely on an "as needed" basis.

he original Ethernet Version 2 frame varies slightly from the 802.3 Ethernet frame format in that a Type field, also referred to as Ethertype, is used in place of the Length field (also 2 bytes), as shown on the Ethernet V2 Frame Format Diagram.
The Type field is used to "steer" the information up the protocol stack to the next layer, just as the DSAP value did in the 802.2 LLC header.
Examples of Ethertype values are 0x0800 for IP and 0x0806 for Address Resolution Protocol (ARP).
