Ethical consumerism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ethical consumerism (or Consumarchy) is buying things that are made ethically by companies that act ethically.
Experienced ethical consumers will have a good idea of which companies are producing which products and by what means, and their purchasing decisions will reflect what they consider to be acceptable commercial behavior.
"Ethical" can be a subjective term both for companies and consumers, but could be considered to mean without harm to or exploitation of humans, animals or the natural environment.

Ethical consumerism is here and it is growing fast: the 8 million people who have bought Make Poverty History white bands (teenagers and pensioners, rich and poor); and the current ethical marketing bonanza (advertising has always been a canny barometer of consumer opinion) both demonstrate this clearly.
While announcements about ethical initiatives from the likes of Amercian Express, Starbucks, and Topshop are welcome, it remains to be seen whether their limited certified-product lines represent a genuine commitment to long-term sustainability initiatives, or simply a token nod to what they see as the latest consumer fashion.

Because ethical consumerism is based wholly on market solutions to the ecological crisis, it is incapable even of recognising the root cause of that crisis, namely the atomising nature of market society and the social relationships it creates.
"Ethical" consumerism, like "ethical" investment, is still based on profit making, the extraction of surplus value from others.
