Ethical relationship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An ethical relationship, in most theories of ethics that employ the term, is a basic and trustworthy relationship that one has to another human being, that cannot necessarily be characterized in terms of any abstraction other than trust and common protection of each other's body.
Family role theory extends this to study paternalistic, maternalistic and sibling roles, and postulates that one's later relationships are formed largely in order to fill the roles one has grown to find comfortable as part of one's family environment - the family of origin thus setting pattern for the family of choice.
As contrasted to theories of ethics that derive from social dispute resolution, or the meta-ethics as defined in Western moral philosophy, ethical traditions emphasizing abstract moral codes expressed in some language with some judgemental hierarchy, ethical relationship theories tend to emphasize human development.

 District of Columbia Legal Ethics
DC Ethics Opinion 28 (1977) stated that a second lawyer cannot provide competent representation to a client (though he may consult with and advise the client) in a matter in which the client already has a lawyer unless the first lawyer knows of and consents to the dual representation or withdraws from the case.
The Legal Ethics Committee opined that, because the lawyer did not need the client's participation in the appeal, the lawyer should continue to represent the client in the way he thought appropriate and should renew his efforts to contact her.
All that is required to establish a fiduciary relationship between a lawyer and her client is a manifestation by the parties, either "explicitly or by their conduct," of their intent to create an attorney-client relationship.

Journal of Social Work Values and Ethics - Dual Relationship Legitimization and Client Self-Determination
As a fiduciary, the social worker is expected to (1) practice with integrity and to act in accordance with her professional standards of conduct and (2) respect the inherent rights and dignity of the client (Black, 1991).
As a fiduciary relationship is based on unequal power and responsibility, it is the social worker's obligation to resist abusing this power and to practice in an ethical manner (Kutchins, 1991).
In its simplest definitional form, non-sexual dual relationships in social work practice are relationships that occur when a social worker assumes a second relationship with a client that may cause actual or potential conflicts between their professional duties and their social, religious or business relationships (Kagel and Giebelhausen, 1994; Reamer, 2001; Reilly, 2003).

NursingWorld | OJIN Ethics Column: "Relationship of the ANA Code of Ethics to Nurses’ Collaborative Efforts"
Collaboration is first mentioned in provision 1 of the Code, interpretive statement 1.5 entitled "relationships with colleagues and others." This part of the Code states that "the nurse values the distinctive contribution of individuals or groups, and collaborates [italics added] to meet the shared goal of providing quality health services" (ANA, 2001, p.
One example of this can be found in provision 1 of the Code, interpretive statement 1.5 that states "the nurse maintains compassionate and caring relationships with colleagues and others with a commitment to the fair treatment of individuals, to integrity-preserving compromise, and to resolving conflict" (ANA, 2001, p.
Further, provision 2 of the Code, interpretive statement 2.2 indicates that "nurses must examine the conflicts arising between their own personal and professional values, the values and interests of others who are also responsible for patient care and health care decisions, as well as those of patients" (ANA, 2001, p.

Multiple relationships and APA's new Ethics Code: Values and applications   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The definition states that a multiple relationship arises when a psychologist is in a professional role with an individual, and that, in addition to this professional role, one of three other conditions is met.
A psychologist refrains from entering into a multiple relationship if the multiple relationship could reasonably be expected to impair the psychologist's objectivity, competence, or effectiveness in performing his or her functions as a psychologist, or otherwise risks exploitation or harm to the person with whom the professional relationship exists.
The APA Ethics Code recognizes that because of the many roles psychologists assume in their work, family, community and social lives, multiple relationships arise in unexpected ways.

APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Whether or not a psychologist has violated the Ethics Code does not by itself determine whether he or she is legally liable in a court action, whether a contract is enforceable, or whether other legal consequences occur.
In addition to actions for violation of the Ethics Code, the APA Bylaws provide that APA may take action against a member after his or her conviction of a felony, expulsion or suspension from an affiliated state psychological association, or suspension or loss of licensure.
A prior professional relationship with a party does not preclude psychologists from testifying as fact witnesses or from testifying to their services to the extent permitted by applicable law.

In nonfundamentalist countries, the same relationship is often assumed to hold, or desired to be held.
Many laws are, unfortunately, grounded in the notion of politics as an extension of ethics.

Coaches agree to terminate a coaching relationship when it becomes clear that the client is no longer gaining benefit (or is being harmed) from the coaching relationship.

 Ethics Advisory Opinion No. 254
In this opinion the Texas Ethics Commission addresses the permissibility of a legislator's use of political contributions to supplement the salaries of state employees under his or her supervision.
This opinion considers the permissibility of two different methods of doing so: by giving political contributions to the state to be used to offset part of the state's cost of paying salaries to certain employees and by paying political contributions directly to the state employees.
The Ethics Commission cannot opine on whether there are other statutory provisions regarding the payment of state salaries that would disallow this indirect method of supplementing state employees' salaries.
