Ethmoid bone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ethmoid bone is a bone in the skull that separates the nasal cavity from the brain.
The ethmoid articulates with fifteen bones: four of the cranium—the frontal, the sphenoid, and the two sphenoidal chonchae; and eleven of the face—the two nasals, two maxillae, two lacrimals, two palatines, two inferior nasal conchae, and the vomer.
The ethmoid bone is very delicate and is easily injured by a sharp upward blow to the nose, such as a person might suffer by striking an automobile dashboard in a collision.

 ethmoid bone
The ethmoid bone (os ethmoidale) is a bone in the skull that separates the nasal cavity from the brain.
The ethmoid bone (os ethmoidale) is exceedingly light and spongy, and cubical in shape; it is situated at the anterior part of the base of the cranium, between the two orbits, at the roof of the nose, and contributes to each of these cavities.
The ethmoid is ossified in the cartilage of the nasal capsule by three centers: one for the perpendicular plate, and one for each labyrinth.

 Ethmoid Hematomas
The condition of an ethmoid hematoma is a hematoma that forms in the complex bony structure that exists in the nasal passages between the eyes.
Ethmoid hematomas appear as soft tissue masses in association with the ethmoid bones and sometimes in the sinuses.
It is important to define the area affected by the hematoma and whether there is sinusal involvement or not as that has implications as far as treatment with the degree of invasiveness of the surgical procedure and prognosis is concerned.

History of the Procedure: Ethmoid sinusitis was often underappreciated for its role as a major causative factor in sinus disease.
Acute ethmoid sinusitis is usually not abrupt in onset (except in cases caused by diving or swimming where bacterial organisms gain entry to the paranasal structures) (Schuller, 1994).
A discharge from the nares may be present, the nasal mucosa and turbinates may be edematous and hyperemic, and a purulent discharge may be present.

 Anatomy
The right and left frontal sinuses are located in the forehead region; the maxillary sinuses are in the cheek area; the ethmoid sinuses are found between the eyes; and the sphenoid sinuses lie deep in the center of the skull.
This complicates the surgeon's task, as does the ethmoid sinuses' adjacency to the eyes and brain, but fortunately, there are common recognizable structures within the ethmoid and new surgical aids to make the process safer.
Deep within the skull behind the ethmoid sinuses are the sphenoid sinuses, small cavities approximately the size of a large grape.

These ethmoid cells literally balloon into the floor of the frontal sinus and are visible due to the contrast between the mucous in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses (1) and the air within the ethmoid or frontal cells (3).
Individuals with small openings from their frontal sinus to the nose, and scarring within the frontal recess area, are more likely to require removal of the entire floor of the affected frontal sinus, than those who have discrete anatomic anomalies which can be completely removed to permit drainage of the sinus.
When frontal sinusitis is due to either bone or dense scar from prior surgery obliterating the communication of the frontal sinus to the nose, one approach to restoring drainage is to remove the entire floor of both frontal sinuses.

Cancer of the Ethmoid Sinuses - Clinical Services - Head and Neck Cancer - Stanford Comprehensive Cancer Center
Ethmoid sinus cancer is a less common form of paranasal sinus cancer, and arises more frequently as an adenocarcinoma than other types of paranasal sinus cancer, meaning the cancer originates from the glandular cells, such as those that secrete mucous.
Nevertheless, early detection and treatment of ethmoid sinus cancer greatly improves survival rates, so it is important not to neglect potential symptoms, particularly if you have been exposed to agents known to increase risk.
Depending on the type and stage of the tumors, ethmoid sinus cancers are usually treated with surgery and radiation, and in advanced cases chemotherapy.

The "ethmoid bone" is located in front of the sphenoid bone.
It consists of two masses, one on each side of the nasal cavity, which are joined horizontally by thin "cribriform plates." These plates form part of the roof of the nasal cavity, and nerves (ethmoidal cells) associated with the sense of smell pass through tiny openings in them.
Portions of the ethmoid bone also form sections of the cranial floor, eye sockets, and nasal cavity walls.
