II. Osteology. 5a. 6. Ethmoid bone. Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body.
The ethmoid bone is exceedingly light and spongy, and cubical in shape; it is situated at the anterior part of the base of the cranium, between the two orbits, at the roof of the nose, and contributes to each of these cavities.
The anterior border articulates with the spine of the frontal bone and the crest of the nasal bones.
In the disarticulated bone many of these cells are opened into, but when the bones are articulated, they are closed in at every part, except where they open into the nasal cavity.

The ethmoid bone is a bone in the skull that separates the nasal cavity from the brain.

The ethmoid bone (os ethmoidale) is a bone in the skull that separates the nasal cavity from the brain.
The ethmoid bone (os ethmoidale) is exceedingly light and spongy, and cubical in shape; it is situated at the anterior part of the base of the cranium, between the two orbits, at the roof of the nose, and contributes to each of these cavities.
The ethmoid articulates with fifteen bones: four of the cranium—the frontal, the sphenoid, and the two sphenoidal conchæ; and eleven of the face—the two nasals, two maxillæ, two lacrimals, two palatines, two inferior nasal conchæ, and the vomer.

Palaeos Vertebrates > Bones> Braincase > Ethnoid Region > The Ethmoid
In general, it may be best to consider the ethmoid as containing three "bones": (a) the paired lateral ethmoids (presumably derived largely from the nasal capsules) and (b) the mesethmoid (presumably derived largely from the fused anterior ends of the trabeculae).
The cribiform plate of the ethmoid is apparently a linguistic redundancy, since both terms refer to the sieve-like nature of the braincase at the roof of the nasal cavity.
This manifestation of the ethmoid has received considerable attention since John Ruben and co-workers argued that turbinals (to pick one of the three names by which these structures are known), or their functional equivalents, are more or less indispensable for endothermic animals.

Although this bone is located in the neck, it is suspended by ligaments from the styloid (spear-shaped) processes that extend downward from the temporal bones.
The palatine bones form part of the lateral walls and floor of the nasal cavity, part of the roof of the mouth, the floor of the orbits, and the rear (posterior) portion of the hard palate.

The ethmoid bone (from Greek ethmos, "sieve") is a bone in the skull that separates the nasal cavity from the brain.
Blows to the head can also shear off the olfactory nerves that pass though the ethmoid bone and cause anosmia, an irreversible loss of the sense of smell and a great reduction in the sense of taste (most of which depends on smell).
Fracture of the lamina papyracea, the lateral plate of the ethmoid labyrinth bone, permits communication between the nasal cavity and the ipsilateral orbit through the inferomedial orbital wall, resulting in orbital emphysema.

 Ethmoid Hematomas
The condition of an ethmoid hematoma is a hematoma that forms in the complex bony structure that exists in the nasal passages between the eyes.
Ethmoid hematomas appear as soft tissue masses in association with the ethmoid bones and sometimes in the sinuses.
A bone flap is made into the sinus over the mass and the hematoma is removed by curettage, cryotherapy, electrocautery, or laser.

The "ethmoid bone" is located in front of the sphenoid bone.
It consists of two masses, one on each side of the nasal cavity, which are joined horizontally by thin "cribriform plates." These plates form part of the roof of the nasal cavity, and nerves (ethmoidal cells) associated with the sense of smell pass through tiny openings in them.
Portions of the ethmoid bone also form sections of the cranial floor, eye sockets, and nasal cavity walls.
