Ethnic Cleansing: Serbs step up intimidation of Hungarians in Vojvodina...Minority communities in Serbia's former Hungarian northern province of Vojvodina (Vajdaság) are feeling the heat after recent stunning gains by Serbian ultra-nationalists raised fears of a return to the ethnic violence of the 1990s.
Vojvodina was part of Hungary since 896 AD and was awarded to the newly formed Yugoslavia by the French in the "Treaty" of Trianon in 1920 when Hungary lost 2/3 of her territory and 1/3 of her Hungarian population.
The speaker of Vojvodina's parliament, Nenad Canak, has accused political elites in Belgrade of harassing pro-European and democratic parties in that province, Deutsche Welle's "Monitor" reported on 12 May. Canak said the alleged oppression is the result of a slide toward increasing nationalism in Belgrade.

The harassment and physical attacks against non-ethnic Serbs-including the beating of children, threats against ethnic Hungarian and pro-autonomy leaders, desecration of cemeteries, vandalism of property and the proliferation of racist, xenophobic and anti-Semitic graffiti-are all too regular occurrences in the province of Vojvodina.
Assailants attacked a group of ethnic Romas in the "Balata" district of Versec/Vrsac, stabbing and causing severe injuries to 24-year-old Stevan Stojkov, one of the victims.
Vojvodina was marred by two days of province-wide demonstrations, vandalism of minority-owned establishments, and incitement to hatred in reaction to the wave of violence in Kosovo.

The members of national minorities and ethnic groups in Vojvodina have the same rights and freedom as the members of the Sebian people who make up the majority.
According the constitution and law, the citizens are equal in their rights and duties, and they are equally entitled to protection before the state and other bodies regardless of their nationality, confession, political or any other orientation, or personal characteristics.
