Greek Civil War - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The EAM and its military wing, the Greek National Liberation Army (Ethnikos Laikos Apeleftherotikos Stratos, or ELAS), were established by the Communist Party of Greece (the KKE).
The most important of such forces were the Greek National Republican League (Ethnikos Dimokratikos Ellinikos Syndesmos, or the EDES), led by a former army officer, Colonel Napoleon Zervas, and the National and Social Liberation (Ethniki Kai Koinoniki Apeleftherosis, or the EKKA), led by Colonel Dimitrios Psaros.
They now were organized as the Democratic Army of Greece (Dimokratikos Stratos Elladas, DSE), under the command of the ELAS veteran Markos Vafiadis (known as "General Markos"), who operated from a base in Yugoslavia.

Ethnikos Laikos Apeleftherotikos Stratos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ethnikos Laikos Apeleftherotikos Stratos (ELAS) (Greek Εθνικός Λαϊκός Απελευθερωτικός Στρατός (ΕΛΑΣ) "National Popular Liberation Army") was the military arm of the communist Ethniko Apeleftherotiko Metopo (EAM) (Εθνικό Απελευθερωτικό Μέτωπο (ΕΑΜ) National Liberation Front) during the period of the Greek Resistance and the Greek Civil War.
All these were co-ordinated and organised by a shadow-government, called the "Mountain Government", in which participated not only communist leaders but also progressive bourgeois, that had nothing to do with communist ideas.
They were joined by other, center-left or non-politicised Greek resistance fighters and by 1944 they controlled three-fifths of the country.

Its core leadership were anti-communist, Venizelist, republicans, in contrast to the larger communist-affiliated Ethnikos Laikos Apeleftherotikos Stratos (ELAS) and its sister group, the non-military Ethniko Apeleftherotiko Metopo (ΕΑΜ).
An ideologically similar, but much smaller, group was the Ethniki Kai Koinoniki Apeleftherosis (EKKA).

From the outset the KKE kept a tight grip on EAM, even if the bulk of its rank-and-file membership (estimates of its size range between 500,000 and 2,000,000) was not communist.
A number of offshoots of EAM came into existence, the most important of which was the "Ethnikos Laikos Apeleftherotikos Stratos" (ELAS, the National People's Liberation Army), which was founded in December 1941 as the military arm of EAM.
There it was joined by another resistance groups, the "Ethnikos Dimokratikos Ellinikos Syndesmos" (EDES, the National Republican Greek League), commanded by General Napoleon Zervas (1891-1957).

 Greek Civil War
Loosely controlled by the EAM and the Communist Party proper, ELAS tended to be somewhat independent, preferring to defeat the Germans first and talk about politics later.
On the other side of the coin, meanwhile, a 51-year-old republican colonel named Napoleon Zercas formed the Ethnikos Dimokratikos Ellinikos Syndesmos (EDES), or National Republican Greek League, which was the bitter enemy of the EAM, but on one occasion conducted operations with ELAS against German and Italian targets.
There were also other groups on the right, such as the organization named Kh, or X, commanded by the Cypriot-born Colonel George Grivas, and it waged a war of terror and counterterror against the Reds and their sympathizers.

While ostensibly independent from KKE, the EAM was, in fact, tightly controlled by the Communists.
Simultaneously, Army officers loyal to the King organized the other core, named Ethnikos Dimokratikos Ellinikos Syndesmos (EDES — National Republican Greek League), under Nikolaos Plastrias and Napoleon Zervas.
Politics played a main role in relationship between ELAS and EDES very early, and was precursor of what was to follow.

 Greek Communism and Macedonian Nationalism
The outbreak of World War II, the collapse of the old order; the occupation of the country, and the repartition of Macedonia by the Axis powers transformed the positions of the KKE and the Macedonians and the relationship between them.
The KKE organized and led by far the most powerful resistance movement in the land, the National Liberation Front (Ethniko Apelefiherotiko Metopo, or EAM), and its military arm, the Greek Popular Liberation Army (Ellinikos Laikos Apeleftherotikos Stratos, or ELAS).
Armed clashes of ELAS with units of the National Republican Greek League (Ethnikos Dimokratikos Ellinikos Syndesmos, or EDES) in early autumn, during the so-called First Round of the Civil War, compelled the communists to court the Macedonians in order to draw them away from Bulgarian influence and into the ranks of ELAS.
