Contrary to many analysts who have emphasized 'ethnic conflict' as a major source of bloodshed, these cases show that it is governments rather than spontaneous explosions of ethnic hatred that usually launch the violence.
In several cases, politicides and ethnocides had been planned and organized long before the humanitarian emergency began.
External agents often become involved in domestic violence, but in the 17 cases foreign intervention was a causal factor in only two.

The Northwest Center for Holocaust, Genocide and Ethnocide Education is a project at Western Washington University, begun in September of 1998, to assist educators in the design and implementation of Holocaust, genocide and ethnocide-related studies and is dedicated to remembering and learning from the past in order to promote the human rights of all people.

Mann prefers the term ‘ethnocide’ for the unintended annihilation of racial groups, but for both victims and perpetrators the consequences are much the same.
Few think of themselves as being in favour of genocide, and many would like to see Israelis dismantle their settlements on the West Bank, but no one is going to demolish their own house and give the land back to the indigenous people.
Perhaps these would not be genocides ‘as such’ in that the ethnic or religious identity of those killed would not be the primary determinant of their fate.

There is little or no purpose in mitigating or compensating the local indigenous populations for a project that will bring "development." As a result, social impact assessment studies on Indian people in Colombia are stillborn.

Native American fiction calls attention to how archives of bones have been collected over the years, and not necessarily used to diagnose the causes of genocide, but to advance the sciences: As one anthropologist suggests,
[m]odern anthropology was built up in the face of colonial and post-colonial genocides, ethnocides, population die-outs, and other forms of mass destruction visited on the [indigenous] or `non-Western' people whose lives, suffering and deaths provide the raw material for much of [the science of anthropology].
The field of anthropology seems to be in the process of much self-examination, which results in an increased sense of the importance of participating in intercultural dialogue for the field.
