Ethnolinguistics is a field of linguistic anthropology which studies the language of a particular ethnic group.
Ethnolinguistics is frequently associated with minority linguistic groups within a larger population, such as the Native American languages or the languages of immigrants.
In these cases, ethnolinguistics studies the use of a minority language within the context of the majority population, and it also studies the perception of the language by the majority population, for example whether the ethnic group receives state support to keep their language alive.

 SILEWP 1996-001
Ethnolinguistic Vitality Theory provides a framework into which the data about a group can be placed and provides a certain degree of predictive power as well.
In addition, Ethnolinguistic Vitality takes into account in a fairly structured way the factors mentioned by Fishman (1991) as being important dimensions in the assessment of the degree of dislocation of a minority language group.
Though the ethnolinguistic identity factors were identified and described for each community, it was exceedingly difficult to express them in such a way as to make them comparable between communities.

 Linguistics - MSN Encarta
The studies of ethnolinguistics and sociolinguistics overlap to a certain extent.
Ethnolinguistics is the study of language and culture and of the relationship of language with ethnicity (it therefore draws on linguistics, anthropology, and sociolinguistics).
However, the study of culture implies a link with that of society, which is where the differences between the two disciplines become blurred.

 LINGSCI
An ethnolinguist would examine aspects similar to the aspects observed in the movie, as well as how language is connected to an ethnic groups background, and the derivation of the names used in naming the groups inhabitants.
An ethnolinguist would examine the impact of language usage for ethnic identity, value judgements, and generalizations.
"Ethnolinguistic identity arises most often in relation to the demands and needs of those who are in an ethnic minority within a community." (Crystal 34) This statement demonstrates the need for an ethnolinguist in the community, to examine such aspects of language usage.

It’s about linguistic preservation becoming a matter of struggle opposing to increasing colonization of international mass culture (for example the one that you brought up, Thomas, - American culture and language).
It is said that this foreign language, along with its culture of course, penetrates not only native, local social life but also intimate regions of consciousness.
Ethnolinguists state that their mother language not only depreciates and devalues from all the other world’s languages, but also by native speakers themselves.

Suppose that tomorrow an ethnolinguist asked you what you did today, and you told him you went surfing.
The ethnolinguist's initial confusion would soon turn to curiosity, and he or she would soon find that technology is important in America.
The fact that almost everyone knows what a bit, a byte, a gigabyte, a hard-drive or CD-ROM are, would indicate to the ethnolinguist that Americans rely heavily on computers, and that almost everyone has some access to them.

Benjamin Lee Whorf is probably the most misread anthropologist of his day.
His notion of linguistic relativity was based on grammatical categories, assuming a cultural diversity and relativism quite distinct from the universalist thrust of cognitive science.
This focus places him firmly in the cross-cultural research tradition of ethnolinguistics.

My first encounter with the spectacular and funny mosaic of diverse ethnic overlapping and criss-crossing was in Thomas Pynchon's amazing book, Gravity's Rainbow.
Yeah, ethnolinguistics is neat stuff; I might have gone into it if my anthro teacher in college hadn't been such a moron.
