 English Border Towns - Selkirk
The town was burned to the ground by the English after Flodden, and at various other odd times, but I do not think that it ever saw much actual street fighting such as was the experience of Jedburgh again and again.
The town was old when Earl David founded its abbey in 1 113 ; probably it had always been a headquarters of the Scottish Kings and their retinue, when hunting in the Forest.
Part of the former, close to the town, would be within their "bounds," but the Tweed is far outside the mile radius which was their limit of liberty.

Historical perspective for Selkirk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
James V. recognised the claims of the burgh by granting 1000 acres of Ettrick Forest to the corporation; and when the town, a little later, was burned by the English, the king gave timber from his forest to rebuild it.
That portion of the parish to the right of the Ettrick rises rather in verdant swells and undulations than in hills; that between the Ettrick and Yarrow is largely occupied with the Duke of Buccleuch's wooded park of Bowhill; and that between the two last-named streams and the Tweed is mainly lofty and heath-clad.
The town is the seat of a presbytery in the synod of Merse and Teviotdale.

Selkirk is an attractive town extending from the hilltop location of its Market Place and High Street down steep slopes to the impressive old woollen mills and more modern industrial estates along the valley of the Ettrick Water.
The road still passes through the centre of the town, but the greater effort involved in navigating Hawick, a few miles to the south, and Galashiels, a few miles to the north, mean that despite its obvious attractions Selkirk leaves less of an impression on the motorist.
By the 1400s this wealthy town was trading via Berwick with Baltic Ports, and had developed a reputation for its shoemaking.
