Etymons (ancestor words) are usually typed on the keyboard.
Phono applies the rules to the etymon in the given order and displays on the screen the successive stages of development and the final reflex (descendant form).
This means that the typical model consists of one set of rules (any of which may be used for the diachronic derivation, or for input adjustment of etymon or reflex); three rule sequences, or order controls (diachronic, etymon-adjustment, and reflex-adjustment); and three alphabets (for etymon input, for reflex input, and for output).

As Karim noted, the sudden demise of Etymon's ISP took everyone by surprise (I go out of town and _look_ what happens :-)) and hence there's some reshuffling in the works.
If need be, however, the site can be moved to one of my own machines (though we're trying to avoid this, for administrative reasons), so it won't be gone long.

Karim Nassar Design - Etymon Systems, Inc. Logos & Branding
An "etymon" is "a word or morpheme from which compounds and derivatives are formed." Karim Nassar Design built upon this concept of "roots of language" for the Etymon Systems' logo.
The branching tree logo is also suggested by the unusual occurrence of the letter "y" in the word "etymon."
Etymon returned to Karim Nassar Design for branding of their primary software packages, "PJ" and "Amberfish." This included development of software logos, icons, and CD-Rom packaging.

AN SGML-BASED STANDARD FOR ENGLISH MONOLINGUAL DICTIONARIES
The solution we adopted is to include tags for "etymons" (the word forms, with language as an attribute), "etymological units" (eu, the equivalent of a lexical entry, including form, pronunciation, meaning, and so forth) and "etymological segments" (es, branches of a hypothetical universal etymology tree, including information about the relationships "rel" among the components).
We must wait for other experts to help us determine whether or not this organization is adequate for the standard.

LINGUIST List 7.899: "trouver", Game, Cree Word for "social", Field Methods
As a student of philology I am currently working on a topic which aims at a combination of etymology and proverb study; the underlying problem is the etymology of the french verb "trouver" which has been under discussion since the turn of the century.
The basic quarrel involved Hugo Schuchardt from Vienna representing the semantic approach (he deduced "trouver" from the latin etymon "turbare aquam", relying on his examination of fishing techniques) and the french Gaston Paris (who defended the "phonetic root" and therefor the etymon "*tropare").
Still today, there is no real solution to the problem (although Schuchardt seemed to "underly" in this conflict...).
