The Snowy River diversion forms part of the Snowy Mountains scheme and the increased quantities of water in the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers make an important contribution to the availability of water for hydro-electric power generation and irrigation.
The Murray-Darling is now a highly regulated river system, with numerous dams, reservoirs, weirs, locks and barrages on all of the major and many of the minor rivers.
A healthy river system would be impossible to achieve.
