Biography - Eugen Jochum (Bio 1167)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
German conductor Eugen Jochum is considered by many to have been the foremost Bruckner conductor of the mid- to late-twentieth century; he producing many outstanding recordings of Bruckner's symphonies (as well as worthy interpretations of a great many other composers).
Jochum became music director of the Hamburg opera (and, along with that title, principal conductor of the Hamburg Philharmonic) in 1934, remaining at that post until 1949 -- effectively avoiding Nazi interference with his musical activities.
Jochum's conducting was marked by a fluent, lyric approach (which nevertheless proved capable of drawing tempestuous results from his players when necessary).

Jochum is powerfull, dramatic and lyrical at the same time and listening to his performances I often get the impression that the music cannot be played differently.

ArkivMusic | Haydn: The "london" Symphonies / Eugen Jochum, London Po
Eugen Jochum was a wonderful Haydn conductor and even in this age of historically informed performance orthodoxy, no apologies are necessary.
Jochum's fast allegro movements are paced with a sense of rightness; I never found myself wishing for slightly faster or slower tempos, and the conductor takes the trouble to differentiate among the various symphonies' slow movements and minuets.
There's plenty of zing to Jochum's outer movements, and pieces like No. 93's finale whiz by with brio, while that symphony's Largo cantabile is done with a radiance bespeaking the conductor's love for the music.

Jochum would go on to re-record all the numbered Bruckner symphonies for EMI in Dresden years later, but this lone concert recording of the Fifth was always at the back of many people's minds.
I also think it typical of Jochum that he should cover every base like this especially since the arrival of the big string theme itself brings such simple dignity and such dark timbre from the Concertgebouw players.
In the third movement Jochum is more aware than many of the need and the rewards of contrasting the scherzo and the trio.

The Staatskapelle Dresden provides spectacular playing, and the only drawback is Jochum's use of the Nowak edition of the score, which imposes extensive cuts throughout (including an especially disfiguring one in the finale).

The German music critic Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt commented in 1982 on Jochum's seriousness as a musician: "The devout Jochum was never inclined to external business.
But he found everywhere that his musicianship attained approval and recognition." Jochum's performances gained fluidity primarily as a result of a liberal use of tempo modifications.
As Jochum aged, his variations became ever more subtle and his interpretations took on a sense of Olympian calm.
