Boudin the elder now established himself as stationer and frame-maker; this time in the greater seaport town of Havre; and Eugene helped in the little business, and, in stolen hours, produced certain drawings.
Young Boudin found his desire to be a painter stimulated by their influence; his work made a certain progress, and the interest taken in the young man resulted in his being granted for a short term of years by the town of his adoption a pension, that he might study painting.
Re-established at Honfleur, Boudin was married and poor.

Although Boudin's art received very little appreciation from the general public, it was greatly admired by such artists as Corot, Courbet, Sisley, Puvis de Chavannes, Manet, Monet, and Jongkind, and by the poet Baudelaire who found his portrayals of nature and natural atmosphere astonishingly accurate.
Boudin's work is light and tender in quality, fresh in color, and scintillating in its portrayal of light and the reflection of light upon landscapes or people.
Although Boudin's favorite subjects were the charmingly dressed ladies and gentlemen of the bourgeoisie promenading upon Normandy beaches, he also painted still lives, landscapes, and even a few portraits.

Although often described as 'the painter of beaches', the beach itself in his painting [The Coast of Portrieux] only occupies [a portion] of the canvas and it is the large, luminous sky that predominates in the work.
Responsible for introducing Claude Monet to this method of painting outdoors, Monet returned the compliment by painting the beach at Trouville several years later.
Boudin's overriding concern was light, and in his dabs of pure color and loose and delicate brushwork, he prefigured Impressionism, marking the link between Corot and the Impressionists.
