Siloti listened to the six- year-old Eugene accompany his mother's singing and agreed to take him on as a student - but on two conditions: he was not to appear in public, and there was to be no exploitation of his talent.
But Istomin's father was worried at his apparent lack of progress and moved him, now nine, to David and Clara Mannes, at the Mannes School of Music.

His friend and colleague Pablo Casals considered Eugene Istomin "among the world's greatest pianists." True enough, and well demonstrated in a career that lasted more than 50 years and 4,000 performances on every continent except Antarctica.
He was one of the most intelligent people I have known, a painter and art collector, an avid reader and conversationalist on a wide range of topics, including history, politics, art and poetry as well as music.
I had the good fortune to interview Eugene Istomin at two climactic points of his later career: his appointment to direct the Maryland festival and Kapell Competition and his decision, two years later, to go barnstorming to small towns across the U.S. in a truck with a driver, two pianos and a piano technician.

Istomin didn't play that well at least in the first part of the concerto 21.
The movement of the keys was rough, and the notes were not clear, as if he was afraid of hitting them, or maybe he was just putting in 85% of his effort (which I doubt it is the case).
Istomin is clearly a fine pianist but the surprise package is the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, rarely if ever ranked alongside the top American orchestras-whether New York, LA, Philadelphia, Boston or Cleveland.

It's not that Istomin doesn't have his merits; in fact his musical, understated approach will find many fans.
The performance isn't short of musical inflection, it's just that Istomin's playing, while cultured, seems to be once removed from the music, surprising for a chamber musician.
