TORONTO (CP) - Eugene Melnyk, the driving force behind Biovail Corp. (TSX:BVF), has taken a further step back in his involvement with the drug company's management by scaling back his title to chairman, from executive chairman, of the board of directors.
Melnyk made the move Tuesday at the company's annual meeting, while telling investors the firm has made great strides to sharpen its focus on corporate governance over the last two years.
Melnyk was also one of directors re-elected the firm's board Tuesday.

Melnyk, a Canadian citizen residing in Barbados since 1991, is not accused of illegal insider trading but is alleged to have failed to file trading reports and other required disclosures, and to have violated regulations covering control blocks of corporate shares.
Melnyk responded in a statement that he disagrees strongly with the OSC staff contention that he had legal control or direction over the shares in the trusts and was required to file reports concerning them.
Melnyk, who stepped aside as Biovail's CEO in October 2004 and as executive chairman last month, is said to have deposited four million Biovail shares, about 19 per cent of the company at the time, into four Cayman Islands trusts in 1996.

Melnyk owning the Renegades makes a lot of sense for all involved IMO but I am not holding my breath that it will happen although I am certainly crossing my fingers and toes.
Eugene also said he just came into Ottawa today and the talk of the town was the Gades ownership and how everyone was bugging him to buy.
Melnyk seems to be the foremost hope in saving them, and I'm sure I'm with everyone when I say I hope he does.

While not accusing Melnyk of insider trading, as such, the OSC alleges that Melnyk repeatedly breached Ontario securities law by failing to file required insider reports in respect of the numerous trades in Biovail stock in 2002-2004, and failing to publicly disclose his complete holdings, and changes in those holdings.
Melnyk released a statement disputing the OSC’s staff contention that he had legal control or direction over the shares in the trusts and was required to file reports concerning them.
