Eugene N. Parker biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
EUGENE N. Eugene N. Parker was born in Houghton, Michigan, in 1927.
In 1958, Parker published his theory of the solar wind, in which the solar corona expands supersonically to the outer reaches of the solar system, now the foundation of modern solar-terrestrial research and solar-planetary relationships.
Prior to Parker's work, the existence of a continuous, but slight, flow of particles from the Sun was suggested by a variety of circumstantial evidence.

What Might The Sun Do One Day
Parker commended new efforts to understand in greater detail the possible mechanisms of solar effects on climate.
Parker agreed with the opinion of some speakers that increasing activity in the Sun contributed to the global warming in the early part of the 20th Century, whilst changes in recent decades could not be explained by continuing solar changes.
Commenting on the current computer projections of future climate change, Parker noted that the models used for this purpose were probably not yet rich enough to capture all the essential complexities of weather and climate.

University of Chicago physicist receives Kyoto Prize for lifetime achievements in science
Parker, 76, the S. Chandrasekhar Distinguished Service Professor in Physics and Astronomy & Astrophysics, will be cited for establishing a new perspective on astrophysics by elucidating the solar wind and other cosmic phenomena.
Having shown that the space between the sun and the Earth is filled with this supersonic flowÑand not a vacuum, as had been believedÑParker’s theory triggered drastic changes in the perception of space.
In addition, Parker has studied cosmical magnetohydrodynamics, the dynamics of gas and magnetic fields in space over scales of approximately a mile.

Parker spiral - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Parker spiral is the shape of the Sun's extended magnetic field as it extends through the solar system.
Unlike the familiar shape of the field from a bar magnet, the Sun's extended field is twisted into an arithmetic spiral by the influence of the solar wind and magnetohydrodynamics.
The solar wind is guided by the Sun's magnetic field and hence largely emanates from the polar regions of the Sun; the induced spiral shape of the field causes a drag torque on the poles due to the magnetic tension force.

The SOHO spacecraft and mission is a joint venture between the European Space Agency and NASA to study the internal structure of the sun, its outer atmosphere, and the origin of the solar wind.
But Parker's most well-known discovery was the solar wind: a flow of ionized gas—plasma—expanding away from the sun's surface into space, ultimately reaching speeds of 200 to 600 miles per second (300 to 1,000 kilometers per second) at large distance, which is 1,000 to 3,000 times the speed of sound in the air on Earth.
Parker, professor emeritus at the University of Chicago, is being recognized for his work in the field of earth and planetary sciences, astronomy and astrophysics.

Variations in the speed of the particles would explain the accelerations, and the tail did not point straight away from the Sun because the flow velocity of the particles was not too many times larger than the velocity of the comet itself.
No one gave a good reason why this "particle radiation" should exist, until Eugene Parker of the University of Chicago in 1958 tried to derive the equilibrium structure of the corona.
The corona, like the Earth's atmosphere, is held down by the Sun's gravity.
