Eugene Sawyer (born: September 3, 1934) is a businessman and former Mayor of Chicago, Illinois (1987-1989) for the Democratic Party.
In 1971, Sawyer was elected as an alderman of the 6th ward.
Sawyer was defeated by Richard M. Daley at the 1989 election, and subsequently retired from politics.

Evans ran in the 1989 special election for Mayor of Chicago to fill Washington's term as independent candidate and lost the 1989 election to Richard M. Daley.

Mayor Sawyer never did get unwavering support of fl aldermen, many of whom remained loyal to Sawyer opponent Tim Evans (Alderman Danny Davis, another fl mayoral hopeful, skipped back and forth between both camps).
