  Artist's Footsteps
Eugene von Guerard continued with his pen and ink and pencil sketching trips for the next fifteen years, and his travels took him to many of the remote areas of Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, New South Wales and New Zealand.
Eugene von Guerard was very much a pioneer, and was obviously a man of considerable strength and determination, venturing into many remote areas in search of his landscape subjects.
Mount Von Guerard in the Alpine National Park in the far north-east of Victoria, stands as a reminder of Eugene von Guerard, and was named in recognition of his outstanding ability as an artist, his contribution to science and his pioneering spirit.

In January of 1862 von Guerard went on a sketching trip to the Goulburn Valley, a trip which inspired this painting.
Von Guerard, as a latter day romantic, was no exception, as attested by two brilliant and large works painted on matching canvases the year following these journeys - Mount Kosciusko in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, and this painting.

 Eugen Guérard
Johann Joseph Eugen von Guérard (known in Australia as Eugène), Australia's most important romantic landscape painter of the third quarter of the 1800s, arrived at Geelong on 28th December 1852 on the Windermere.
Von Guérard stayed in Düsseldorf until 1852, when he spent a short time working in England as drawing tutor to the son of Augustus Tulk, who later became the first librarian of the Melbourne Public Library.
Von Guérard first spent 13 months on the goldfields near Ballarat (and made many sketches of life on the diggings) before continuing his career as a painter in Melbourne.

Eugène von Guérard arrived in Victoria in December 1852, and after a short visit to Melbourne, he travelled to the Ballarat gold-fields.
Von Guérard made a significant contribution to our knowledge of the Victorian gold rush period through the illustrated journal he kept as a digger.
Despite the wealth generated by the gold-fields, the pastoral squatters of Victoria were the major art patrons in the colony during the 1850s and 1860s.

By the time von Guerard left Australia for England in 1881 Marvellous Melbourne was an imposing city with numerous theatres, music halls, a new state collection, imposing architecture, a telephone exchange, cable trams, gas lighting, The Age newspaper, rail connections, and the Melbourne Cup.
In October 1862 von Guerard began a tour of the north-eastern district of Victoria and Mount Kosciusko with Professor Georg von Neumayer, who was conducting a magnetic survey for the Victorian colonial government.
In Italy von Guerard became familiar with the landscape art of the 'idyllic' Claude Lorraine, the 'heroic' Nicolas Poussin and the 'wildly turbulent' Salvator Rosa.

Eugene von Guerard and Thomas Clark both arrived in Australia in the early 1850s yet they depict land in quite different ways.
Von Guerard (1811-1901) painted 'Tower Hill' as an idyllic landscape where the Aboriginal group, shown in the foreground, appear to live in a latter-day paradise.
In von Guerard's later painting of 1884, 'Old Ballarat as it was in the summer of 1853-54', the genesis of a city is captured.

The son of an artist and court painter, von Guérard was born in Vienna, Austria.

Castle Rock, Cape Schanck was painted in 1865 based on sketches von Guérard made in 1863 on his second visit to Cape Schanck, which forms the southern extremity of Mornington Peninsula approximately 70 km from Melbourne.
Von Guérard's meticulous work is influenced by the ordered discipline and intense mood of the German romantic painters of the early 1800s.

In Australia, Eugene von Guérard (1811-1901) echoed Church's passionate striving to capture the essence of the land.
Between the mid-1850s and early 1860s von Guérard painted the properties of wealthy farmers in Victoria, the fern gullies of the Dandenong ranges, the mountains in the Grampians and Mt Kosciusko, the coastline at Cape Schanck and the extinct volcano of Tower Hill.
Such was the penetrating exactness and vision of von Guérard's work that his painting of Tower Hill (1855) was used over 100 years later, in 1961, as a blueprint for the restoration and reforestation program of the area.
