CER | Lithuanian economics minister confirmed
This week, Eugenijus Gentvilas, the former mayor of KlaipÄ—da, was confirmed as the new economics minister, replacing Eugenijus Maldeikis.
Gentvilas confessed certain reservations about becoming the economics minister, since he would prefer to work in the communications sphere, but he hopes to get to know his new job very quickly.
It appears that Grubliauskas joined the Liberals only a couple of weeks ago, thus speculations arose that the party is attempting to capitalise on his reputation as a popular jazz musician.

After the defeat, on October 27, of former prime minister Rolandas Paksas by Eugenijus Gentvilas in elections for the LLU party chairmanship, the lack of unity became conspicuous, and, on December 21, Paksas and ten other LLU deputies formally withdrew from the party.
The rift was made final, on January 22, when the breakaway faction announced the formation of a new political party, to be called the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
It seems likely that the LLU and the newly formed LDP will field separate candidates for the presidency: Eugenijus Gentvilas and Rolandas Paksas, respectively.

At the same time, Lithuania closed the energy chapter of the acquis communautaire, the set of legislative changes to be adopted before membership.

Eugenijus Gentvilas, the opposition leader in parliament, is recommending strongly that Lithuania move towards a professional force of 12,000 officers, NCOs and soldiers.
Gentvilas supports his position with two important considerations: NATO responsibilities will require Lithuania to maintain a professional force capable of rapid deployment, while a cost analysis for a conscript system demonstrates that it is more expensive than a fully professional force.
(BALTIC NEWS SERVICE, 27 Nov 02; via Lexis-Nexis) Although the transition to a fully professional force is not likely until 2006, Gentvilas is pushing for this movement to begin immediately and his proposition is gaining support from his colleagues in parliament.
