La historia de FEMSA inicia en el año de 1890 con la fundación de la Cervecería Cuauhtémoc en Monterrey, N.L., gracias a un grupo de entusiastas empresarios encabezados por Don Isaac Garza, José Calderón, José A. Muguerza, Francisco G. Sada, y Joseph M. Schnaider.
Eugenio Garza Sada se incorporó como auxiliar en el departamento de estadística y con el tiempo se convirtió en la cabeza de Cervecería Cuauhtémoc, concretando uno de los puntos básicos de la filosofía de la empresa, "El hombre por encima de toda consideración económica".
El 6 de septiembre fue creado, tras la visión de Don Eugenio Garza Sada, en ese entonces director de Cervecería Cuauhtémoc, el Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey que era llamado "El Noveno y más Querido de los Hijos" de Don Eugenio, su más ferviente promotor e ideador.

Eugenio Garza Sada (January 11, 1892 – September 17, 1973) was a Mexican businessman and philanthropist who is best known for founding the ITESM in 1943.
In 1943, in conjunction with a number of other prominent businessmen, Garza Sada founded ITESM, that is, the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, with the hope of producing a school with strong moral principles and high academic quality.

Garza Sada studied civil engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating in 1917 and returning to Mexico, where he began working at the Cervecería Cuauhtémoc, a major beer producer in Monterrey founded by Garza Sada's father and uncle.
In the following years, he started a number of businesses, including a glass company, called Vitro.
He died during a failed kidnapping attempt, leaving his wife and eight children.

Opened in 2003, the controversial Puente Atirantado is a suspension bridge that crosses the Río Santa Catarina and joins San Pedro Garza García with Monterrey.
It was highly controversial due to its cost, its design (which appears to have been cribbed from Santiago Calatrava), and the fact that the river it crosses is dry.
While Tigres play in their stadium, the Estadio Universitario in San Nicolás de los Garza, Rayados plays in the Estadio Tecnológico, a facility owned by the ITESM, and rented to the team.
