Eumeces obsoletus, also known as the Great Plains skink is abundant in Eastern Kansas, yet oddly enough is considered a rare species in Missouri (Collins 1993).
Eumeces obsoletus remains under this rock most of the time and rarely basks openly in the sun because these skinks evidently obtain sufficient heat from the underside of the rock, and for this reason Eumeces obsoletus have a very low mortality rate from predators (Collins 1993).
Eumeces obsoletus tend to eat a variety of insects and spiders the most common prey being grasshoppers, crickets, and beetles (Johnson 1987).

The study; Size and Growth Rates of Great Plains Skinks (Eumeces obsoletus) was conducted both at the Clay Blair site and the Ruby Lee site on three different dates.
