Euphoria Morning is the ultimate test, with which the world will be divided into two categories: those who are merely one-dimensional music listeners, and those who truly understand the essence of note/melody interaction.
Euphoria Morning is one of the best-written art pop albums this decade, and a testament to a songwriter's maturity and constant quality output in different genres, even if half the people listening don't know their elbow from their asshole.
Euphoria Morning is a return to the swelling movement of a song, the subtle build-up using "uncommon" instruments and sounds to achieve a diverse, worldly, instinctively trustworthy sound.

 This 'Morning' not that sweet
Though not quite the showcase of diversity or dynamics that Weiland's 12 Bar Blues was, Euphoria Morning more than has its moments, celebrating a range of styles that the previously pigeonholed Cornell attacks with fervor but meets with mixed results.
While Weiland tried to dabble in something completely different, Cornell seeks to pay homage to the variety of genres that have influenced him throughout the years, preferring to safely stay where he is while taking on a project that is collectively new but, on a smaller level, much older and more familiar.
Euphoria Morning is hardly Cornell's attempt to break new ground, however, he makes it easier to accept than if had he tried to play it up as something different.

That, along with his stellar contribution to the Singles soundtrack, suggested that Cornell had aspirations of being a singer/songwriter, so it's not a surprise at all that he decided to tie those two loose ends together to provide the foundation for his solo debut album, Euphoria Morning.
There's no question that it's a rock album, but it's a shaded, textured rock album, lacking the grinding sludge and furious rock that were his previous band's stock-in-trade, yet it's undeniably of a piece with Superunknown.

Soundgarden fans may miss the full-bodied, heavier electric sound (and indeed a full-blown blast or two might have added a nice ingredient to Euphoria) -- but on this album, Cornell has crafted some of the sharpest melodies of his career.

On the track entitled "Sweet Euphoria," Chris's lone guitar strummings are accompanied by surreal lyrics almost reminiscent of the Beatles.

His haunting, carefully steered tenor has lost nothing in the couple of years since the last Soundgarden release; all that has changed is a degree of experimentation in production habits.
Cornell's lyrics on Euphoria Morning are frequently poetic, as in the striking "Pillow of Your Bones"; his favorite theme seems to be relationships -- not so much as lovers, but as blind and limping veterans lost in some vast and deep darkness.
The topic matter is a bit limiting when practiced exclusively, and so detracts a bit from this record, but the sincerity and the inventive prose do allow him to transcend this limitation on several tracks.
