 The Bitterns
Bitterns are less well known than Herons and Egrets because they are secretive birds living mainly in reed beds where they feed on eels, fish and insects.
The Eurasian Bittern is a partial migrant in Britain where it has suffered considerable decline in numbers in the last 200 years due to extensive habitat destruction.
The European Bittern builds its nest about water level on matted roots in reed beds, the nest is built, the eggs incubated and the young raised entirely by the female.

SLTrib Utah City Guide - Travel - The recluse in the marsh
When alarmed, the bittern strikes a unique pose: The dagger-shaped bill, so useful to capture prey, shoots straight skyward, transforming into the guise of the long, tapering tip of a cattail leaf.
Instantly the bittern began to sway gently from side to side with an undulating motion which was most pronounced in the neck but was participated in by the body.
The best places for spotting bitterns in Utah is at the Ouray National Wildlife Refuge, 25 miles southeast of Roosevelt, and the Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge, about 40 miles northwest of Delta in the state's west desert.

American Bittern - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although common in much of its range, the American Bittern is usually well-hidden in bogs, marshes and wet meadows.
However, fossils found in the Ichetucknee River, Florida, and originally described as a new form of heron (Palaeophoyx columbiana; McCoy, 1963) were later recognized to be a smaller, prehistoric subspecies of the American Bittern which lived during the Late Pleistocene (Olson, 1974) and would thus be called B.
The American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.

 birdlife in africa
Bitterns are short-legged, cryptically plumaged, retiring and seldom seen.
Many of the traditional breeding localities have been destroyed due to drainage for agriculture but some of these birds have adapted well to man-made water impoundments and may even be more numerous than they were prior to human settlement.
The bitterns, on the other hand, are sensitive to disturbance and the Eurasian Bittern (which has both resident and migratory populations in Africa) is regarded as globally endangered.

The Eurasian Bittern is a rare resident of water-edge habitats in the south of Central Siberia whose numbers are further decreasing.
An inhabitant of large bodies of water in steppes and forest-steppes, it also appears both in taiga and montane areas but does not penetrate deeply into either.
It was observed in summer on the Yenisey River north of the mouth of the Kas River at 60° N in southern taiga (Bursky and Vakhrushev 1983), and Chernikov found an individual in eastern Evenkia in the summer 1986 on the Nizhnyaya Tunguska River near Yukta (63° N, mid taiga).

BirdForum - Possible American Bittern in Donana
When I returned home yesterday evening I consulted my books and discovered that the American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) has a rather distinctive dark stripe down each side of the neck culminating in a rather large dark patch, which is, apparently, not evident in the Great Bittern.
I sure hope it is an American Bittern and that it stays there until the end of the 1st week in May as we are going to Spain from April 25th to May 7th and are planning 3 days around Donana.
The Bittern was 300 metres from there and I have since learned that it has supposedly been around for quite a while, having been seen twice over the last five weeks, although nobody else has yet explored the possibility of American Bittern.
