Eurasian Black Vulture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Eurasian Black Vulture (Aegypius monachus) is also known as the Monk Vulture, the Cinereous Vulture, or just the Black Vulture.
This bird is an Old World vulture, and is not related to the New World vultures which are in a separate family Cathartidae.
It is therefore also unrelated to the American Black Vulture despite the similar name and coloration.

 Vulture - MSN Encarta
The American vultures are superficially similar to large birds of prey, but are probably more closely related to storks, with which they share some anatomical and behavioral features.
The American vultures also differ from the Eurasian group in that they have longitudinal, perforated nostrils without a partition and lack a voice, due to the absence of a syrinx.
The Andean condor is classified as Vultur gryphus, the turkey vulture as Cathartes aura, the American fl vulture as Coragyps atratus, and the California condor as Gymnogyps californianus.

The Egyptians considered the vulture to be an excellent mother, and its wide wingspan was seen as all-encompassing and providing a protective cover to its infants.
Many vultures are endangered and conservationists decided to breed some in captivity for 20-30 years in order to protect and make the species larger; these conservationists are trying to get enough birds into a protected area before they all disappear.
The one species of vulture that is the closest to extinct is the slender-billed vultures.

They both dominate their respective Gyps species (White backed Vulture and Rupell's Griffon for Lappet-faced and Eurasian Griffon for Eurasian Black) at the carcase, both are tree-nesters rather than cliff-nesters and both tend not to be colonial.
I suspect that they are too similar to be able to co-exist and I don't know of any area where there is geographical overlap (perhaps they may previously have met in North-West Africa however Eurasian Black is effectively extinct as an African species though the odd bird may wander from the nearby increasing Spanish population).
