In the Middle Ages, falconry was a very popular pastime (what today might be called a hobby), and of all the different birds used for it, the Eurasian Hobby was perhaps the most popular.
What are hobbies for some people are professions for others: a computer game tester may enjoy cooking as a hobby, while a professional chef might enjoy playing (and helping to debug) computer games.

 Surfbirds Birding Trip Report: Estonia, May 2004
Common Buzzard was soon found followed by a male Montagu's Harrier and then later a Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Common Ravens, Yellowhammer, Eurasian Hobby and then a pair of Montagu's Harriers.
Two Eurasian Hobbies then flew in off the sea and over our heads, before we returned to the hotel for breakfast.
Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Common Buzzard, White-tailed Eagle, Eurasian Hobby and a European Honey Buzzard were seen, while a distant eagle was too far away to identify!

Juvenile Northern Hobby is the only one that comes close, and there is nothing in the observer's notes or photos that would rule it out.
He didn't elaborate on the alleged dissimilarities to Northern Hobby, but I can't see any (dissimilarities, that is).
Maybe he meant the pale forehead and nape, but these could be faded areas that are rufous in fresh plumage, or maybe these are more noticeable in Asian than in European individuals.

 Pyrenees trip report
Day one we travelled from Toulouse Airport to Gedre in the Pyrenees stopping at a beautiful hill top near Ausseing where we ate al fresco lunch in an ancient meadow full of flowers and butterflies while watching for raptor migration.
A hobby obliged with stunning views and several buzzards drifted past.
Four tree pipits sat on nearby wires showing their short hind claws and yellowish fronts while jays and great spotted woodpeckers called in the trees behind.

Higher up, the mountains had disappeared into the mist but we still added the tianschanica subspecies of Eurasian Treecreeper and the bactriana subspecies of Eurasian Magpie, the latter having noticeably more white in the wings.

Then it was back up the Kokpek Pass where we checked a couple of rocky gorges The first gorge behind the cafes (which became affectionately known as Toilet Canyon because of the toilets at its base), yielded a superb soaring Saker, Himalayan Griffon-vulture, four Chukars, Rock and Whitecapped Buntings and Hume's Whitethroat.

 Kenya Birds - Ngulia Bird Ringing 2000-01
The first, 20 November-7 December, with up to 20 people in the team was outstanding with over 23,600 migrants being ringed, including two new species for the Ngulia ringing list: a Eurasian Hobby and a Eurasian Wryneck.
There was only one Eurasian Nightjar, only two Tree Pipits, ten Rufous Bush Chats, no Northern Wheatears (and only one Pied and one Isabelline) and just 4 Upcher's Warblers.
Species other than the four main ones were even more poorly represented than in 2000; 21 Eurasian Nightjars (admittedly 21 times better than the 2000 total), 2 Eurasian Rollers, 19 Rufous Bush Chats, 88 Iranias, 7 Common Rock Thrushes, 7 Upchers and 37 Barred Warblers and not a single Palearctic Wheatear.

The only Eurasian birds of note this season in the Maritimes, aside from waterfowl, was a Eurasian Hobby -- but editor Blake Maybank was quick to point out the ship-riding habits of small falcons, amply substantiated in the Sea Swallow, the annual report of the Royal Naval Bird Watching Society.
Despite overwhelming circumstantial evidence that most of the Eurasian passerines notes around the Great Lakes were not of wild provenance, we still think it important for observers to record what they see and study individual birds in detail.
