The Hoopoe Upupa epops is in the same order of often colourful near passerine birds as the kingfishers, bee-eaters, and rollers.
However, in the Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy, the Hoopoe is separated from the Coraciiformes as a separate order, the Upupiformes.
Hoopoes are widespread in Europe, Asia and North Africa.

A few kilometres later a Common Pheasant was seen in a field near Valmojado, and the first Eurasian Hoopoe crossed the road in Santa Cruz del Retamar, where we headed south on smaller roads.
A flock of nine Eurasian Black Vultures had a party on a carcass 7 km west of Menasalbas, the village of Las Ventas con Peña Aguilera provided the first Common Stonechats, and on the hill at P:to del Milagro we recognized a singing European Robin, a Great Tit and a couple of Chaffinches.
A Eurasian Wren, a Dunnock, a Blue Tit, and big surprise; a Lesser Whitethroat, were all singing from the slope below the restaurant.

 Surfbirds Birding Trip Report: Poland - May 2004
As if this was not enough, a stop for a pair of Black Redstarts produced a Eurasian Wryneck, and whilst we watched this, a pair of Eurasian Golden Orioles flew into the trees behind.
There was also Eurasian Curlew, a scarce bird in Poland, which seems strange as there are so many marshes and meadows.
Eurasian Woodcock were common here but we were soon off bumping our way down the sandy forest tracks.

The plains near Lleida are excellent for Little Bustard, Eurasian Thick-Knee, and Hoopoe, and last year in a small patch of trees we had excellent views of Red-necked Nightjar perched on the ground.
The ravines of the rivers Flumen and Mascún are regarded as the most rugged and inaccessible of all in the pre-Pyrenean ranges and offer spectacular rock formations with abundant birdlife.
Eurasian Eagle-Owls can often be found at their daytime roost, and on one evening we will visit a superb area for Black-shouldered Kite, Azure-winged Magpie, and Red-necked Nightjar.

The common birds seen in the city were White Wagtail, Common Swift, Barn Swallow and Eurasian Tree Sparrow.

The river valley cliffs in the south are also noted for several species, including resident Peregrine, Eurasian Eagle Owl, Black Wheatear and Red-billed Chough amongst others, along with probably the highest concentration of White Storks, those these can all be found in other parts of the province too (though are sometimes rare).
Finally, in simplistic terms, the remaining notable suite of species are those of mid- and upper-level montain areas, some of which are found here at the extreme southern edge of their respective distributions.

John heard some shrews calling, but for the first time, my high pitched hearing loss (from my first factory job) cut me out of the action: I could only hear the sound of scurrying in the leaves.
A Eurasian Woodcock gave a deep call, then a higher pitched call and began "roding." It displayed earlier at dusk than the smaller American Woodcock in North America, so it was possible to see its color as it flew at tree top level and out over the younger pines.

I was utterly captivated to see my first EURASIAN HOOPOEs come looping over the city wall.
We had a long and fruitless discussion in Russian about travel plans for the next day, but basically decided to try and fly to avoid the next land leg, said to be much worse.
The drive up beside the Arashan River is a beautiful one, and we are soon into the Tian Shan Pyramidal Fir forest, with BROWN DIPPER diving from rock to rock on the river, COMMON RAVEN and GOLDEN EAGLE overhead.

First we went to Km 20 and indeed, after another collective search with a few other birders, we saw the White-throated Robin, a female, with splendid views in the first sunrays.
Then we went on to Km 33 for our last chance on Hoopoe Lark here (although not a lifer), and indeed found it there (see Arava valley map for location).
In the fields before (just N of) the kibbutz entrance we had Black Francolin again (one pair seen and another two heard), and saw a party of three Hoopoes being chased off by a Spur-winged Plover.

It is private property, but access is readily provided to staff of the American University's Birds of Armenia Program.
The only species of note not seen in the company of Vasil was the Eurasian Griffon.
A roost with about a dozen birds was on a cliff overlooking the road the museum tour took to Georgia, and an extended viewing stop proved highly interesting to a busload of non-birders.

Our superb picnic lunches had to be abandoned for a few days.
However, this interruption did not dampen the group’s spirit and some good birding was still to be seen in around the Camargue, especially the Eurasian Eagle Owl asleep on the cliff face and blizzards of Greater Flamingos in the marshes.

A number of marshy areas fringe Koko Nor, which is known for its breeding colonies of Bar-headed Geese and Pallas's and Brown-headed Gulls.
