There are approximately 150 couples of Eurasian Penduline Tits breeding in Denmark.

The Eurasian Penduline Tit Remiz pendulinus is not a tit (Paridae) but one of thirteen members of the Remidae, a family ranging right across Eurasia (Remiz and Cephalopyrus), throughout Africa (Anthoscopus and Pholidornis), and - if current thinking is followed - is represented in the Nearctic by the Verdin Auriparus flaviceps.
Migratory in the north of its range, the Eurasian Penduline Tit is a widespread breeding bird in and around reedbeds, ponds and ditches in much of central and eastern Europe.

The ravines of the rivers Flumen and Mascún are regarded as the most rugged and inaccessible of all in the pre-Pyrenean ranges and offer spectacular rock formations with abundant birdlife.
Eurasian Eagle-Owls can often be found at their daytime roost, and on one evening we will visit a superb area for Black-shouldered Kite, Azure-winged Magpie, and Red-necked Nightjar.

But, here in the middle of the Eurasian landmass, just about as far from the ocean as it is possible to be, the birds are simply outstanding.
As we travelled further east, we paused to watch White-crowned Penduline Tits at their nest, and a colony of the recently split Pale Martins nesting in a roadside cutting.
Although this form is quite variable, it seems that the presumed male was the most extreme form, which bears little resemblance to Eurasian Penduline Tits in Europe, while the female is more typical of this race (see Vaurie 1959 for discussion).

Arriving late we were treated to our first truly Romanian meal of polenta and a pair of migrant Pied Flycatchers in the garden.
A walk around the church complex was fascinating and we also found a beautiful Eurasian Jay.
We also found a Marsh Tit that turned out to be our last new trip bird even though we stopped again at the edge of the Babadag Forest, where we "dipped out" on Sombre Tit.

Of the 212 species observed on this trip, 51 were not seen in the South.
Half of these 51 were rather common European species, but the other half includes species like Black Francolin, Sombre Tit, Little Swift, Crane.
Great Black-headed Gull had left from Ma'agan Mika'el but we got a few of them in Eilat just before they left there too.
