Eureka County is a county located in the state of Nevada.
Eureka County was created out of eastern Lander County in 1873 after silver was discovered more than 100 miles east of Austin.
It was named for the ancient Greek term, "Eureka," meaning, "I have found it." This term was used earlier in California and other locations.

Eureka is full of many of its original buildings, ruins of its smelters and other sites of its glory years when it produced $40 million in silver, $20 million in gold and 225,000 pounds of lead.
By 1872, Eureka had grown to 4,000; by 1874 to 6,000; and by 1878, the town reached its peak of 9,000.
Eureka is one of the more interesting places in the state—definitely a must for any tour of Nevada.

The Eureka Sentinel Building a block south has been converted to a wonderful museum, with the old newspaper back-shop as it was left when the last tramp printer finally called it quits.
According to family recollection, Nevada governor Reinhold Sadler (whose two story brick home is half a block north of the Colonnade House) used a tunnel to get to his Main Street store in the winter so that he wouldn't have to meet his neighbors on the street.
The country around Eureka will probably always provide excellent hunting, and simply breathing in the cedar-scented air of the wide open spaces is an act of pure pleasure, utterly unimaginable to the people who lived here breathing its poisonous smoke in the century before last.

 Nevada Yucca Mountain Lawsuits – Eureka County, Nevada
Nevada's funding lawsuit, which involves State access to federally-granted oversight money for the project, is set to be heard in federal court on January 10, 2005.
State Attorney General Brian Sandoval claimed a sound victory for Nevada, saying that the EPA would have to form a new rule with a tougher standard - a standard the Energy Department would not be able to meet due to Yucca Mountain's inferior geology.
The rest of Nevada's challenges, including the Constitutional case claiming Nevada's sovereign rights as a state were being violated, and the Recommendations case claiming DOE and President Bush acted illegally in recommending Yucca Mountain, were dismissed by the judges.
