The college was founded in 1855 by a group from the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), who freed their slaves and moved from Kentucky to Illinois to escape the institution of slavery, said Paul Lister, the college's president.
Eureka is also the first college in Illinois and the third in the United States to admit men and women on an equal basis.
The college predates the founding of the city of Eureka by one year and today the college is a major part of the lives of both the students and members of the community, said Eureka's mayor, Laura Siscoe.

The college's Ronald Reagan Museum was also opened to the public with extended hours on weeknights and the weekend.
The connection between Reagan and Eureka College, from which he graduated with a degree in economics and sociology, is unique among modern presidents, said Eureka College President Paul Lister.

Down through the years these colleges and universities have maintained intellectual freedom because they were beholden to no political group, for when politics control the purse strings, they also control the policy.

Eureka tied the game with 11:24 remaining as Siggers passed to Dave O'Donal for a 52 yard touchdown.

Although the acting bug took hold during a successful theater career at Eureka, Reagan's first job after graduation in 1932 was as a sports broadcaster for station WOC in Davenport, Iowa.
He won the job after reciting play-by-play from one of his football games at Eureka the previous year.
Just as he was the student leader recruited to oppose faculty cutbacks during his Eureka years, Reagan's combination of charisma and plain speaking catapulted him to the presidency of the Screen Actor's Guild during a time of ongoing controversy.
