Eureka is full of many of its original buildings, ruins of its smelters and other sites of its glory years when it produced $40 million in silver, $20 million in gold and 225,000 pounds of lead.
By 1872, Eureka had grown to 4,000; by 1874 to 6,000; and by 1878, the town reached its peak of 9,000.
Eureka is one of the more interesting places in the state—definitely a must for any tour of Nevada.

Stop on the Eureka and Palisade beginning in 1874 although in the 1860s, a well was dug to supply water for freight teams heading to Eureka.
Many furnaces were built in Eureka and the thick fl smoke gave the town the nickname of "the Pittsburgh of the West." However, by the mid-1880s, most of the ore bodies were exhausted.
The Eureka Opera House is the centerpiece, having been restored and is used as the community center of activity.

The main Gold Quarry open-pit mine and mill complex is situated 11 km northwest of the town of Carlin (population approximately 2,000), in Eureka County, amidst rolling, sagebrush-covered hills on the east ank of nearby Mary's Mountain (elevation 2,273 meters).
Climatic conditions of the area are typical of the Great Basin high desert: 45 to 60 cm of snow and temperatures down to -20degF in winter, and afternoon thunderstorms and temperatures up to 104degF in summer.
