All euro coins have a common obverse showing the worth and a national reverse showing an image particular to the country it was issued in; the monarchies have a picture of their reigning monarch, other countries usually have their national symbols.
The euro was established by the provisions in the 1992 Maastricht Treaty on European Union relating to establishing an economic and monetary union.
Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City previously used currencies that were replaced by the euro, and now mint their own euro coins by virtue of agreements concluded with EU member states (Italy in the case of San Marino and Vatican City, and France in the case of Monaco), on behalf of the European Community.

The economy has improved steadily over the last few years, as the government tightened policy in the run-up to Greece's entry into the EU's single currency, the euro, on January 1, 2001.
Reducing the government deficit is also a major challenge, notably after Eurostat revealed in 2004 that Greek government finance statistics, on the basis of which the European institutions accepted Greece to join the Euro zone, had been massively falsified.
