EuroNCAP - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
EuroNCAP, the European New Car Assessment Programme, is a safety assessment programme for automobiles supported by several European governments, many major manufacturers and motoring organisations across the world.
EuroNCAP publishes safety reports on new cars and awards 'star ratings' based on the performance of the vehicles in a variety of crash tests, including front, side and pole (side) impacts, and impacts with pedestrians.
The front impact test is conducted at 64km/h (40mph) into an offset deformable barrier.

EuroNCAP is a consortium, including government and non government agencies in every EU country.
The EuroNCAP test regime has now been in place long enough for real world field studies to have confirmed that a car which scores highly in an NCAP test is indeed a safe car on the road as well.
EuroNCAP and, here in Australia, ANCAP can largely take the credit for raising awareness of safety among car buyers, and, as a consequence, pushing car makers to consider crash protection as an integral part of a new car’s design and engineering.

The folks who work with the EuroNCAP have also whipped up a few changes to the test itself, as unlike the majority of other crash tests done by the NHTSA and the IIHS, the speeds, and impact conditions tend to be higher.
Fairly high loads were found on the chest and upper legs, but the dummies were kept safe and secure with an 81% front impact score.

Injury and deformation trends with offset crash tests
Under the EuroNCAP assessment protocol scores are assigned to each injury measurement and modifiers (penalties) apply to some of these scores (see Appendix).
EuroNCAP applies a "chest score modifier" to A-pillar displacements greater than 100mm, scaling up to a 2 point penalty at 200mm displacement.
In the absence of injury measurements for dummy feet the EuroNCAP protocol derives a "foot score" from rearward brake pedal displacement.

It would be impossible to test a car for every circumstance in which a crash may occur – so instead the tests simulate a wide range of common accidents as well as accidents which result in high fatality rates.
In order to rate cars, a points system has been developed and points can be achieved in several ways, all of which relate to preventing injury to an occupant in a collision.

 Assessment of Child Restraint Performance
Analysis of several EuroNCAP tests revealed that, although peak decelerations were similar, dummy injury measurements were substantially less in the NCAP tests than those of the CREP tests.
This suggests that the EuroNCAP injury criteria for the frontal crash are inappropriate for the assessment of child restraints with top tethers.
The safety performance being evaluated by EuroNCAP tends to be associated with the design of the CR rather than the vehicle (the vehicle manufacturer is given the option of nominating a child restraint to be used in the test).
