The countdown is proceeding on schedule for launch of Ariane 509 with the Eurobird and BSAT-2a communications spacecraft.
For launch, Eurobird will be positioned on top of the payload "stack" inside the fairing and will be deployed first, while BSAT-2a will be located on the bottom inside the Sylda 5 dual payload adapter.
Both the European Eurobird and the Japanese BSAT-2a spacecraft are proceeding through routine pre-launch tests and checks before being mated to the Ariane 5 awaiting them in the final assembly building.

 Eurobird 1
The Eurobird satellite, built for the operator Eutelsat, provides broadcasting and telecommunication services primarily to the Western and Central European region from an orbital position of 28.5° E. Launched in the first quarter of 2001, the satellite is designed for 24-channel operation over its minimum lifetime of 12 years.
In addition, the high transmit power of the Eurobird satellite makes it ideal for providing broadcast programmes and multimedia services into very small and inexpensive satellite dishes.
As well as a fixed beam, the satellite has two steerable beams which offer the possibility for service provision at either a national or a regional level.

EUROBIRD 2 is a Ku-band satellite with a high-power Superbeam coverage that is focussed on western and central Europe, stretching from the British Isles and southern Scandinavia in the north, to Spain, Italy and Greece in the south, and across to Poland and Hungary in the east.
SKYPLEX enables digital television and data broadcasters to uplink individually from the rooftops of their premises and to be directly received by DVB terminals, thereby bypassing the need to deliver signals to an on-ground multiplex through a contribution link.
Through a configuration of narrowband and wideband transponders, EUROBIRD 2 is particularly well suited for one-way and two-way broadband services for consumer, SOHO and SME markets.

Media Network Weblog » Blog Archive » Eurobird 10 suffers failure of solar panel
The Eurobird 10 satellite (formerly Hotbird 3), which was moved to a new orbital position of 10 degrees East on the night of 3/4 October, has suffered a failure of one of its solar panels.
The satellite is still operational, but with a reduced power and capacity. Eutelsat is working with the satellite’s makers, EADS Astrium, to investigate and hopefully fix the problem.
If the problem cannot be rectified, it would be a serious financial blow to Eutelsat, which already had bookings for 55 million euros worth of business for Eurobird 10.
