	Eurodicautom - Meta
		Eurodicautom is a multilingual dictionary of the European Union.
		My concern is that I feel the Eurodicautom powers that be should realise that their dictionary has become an almost indispensible part of many translator's lives.
		I feel it is very important for them to see this and that it would be good if they interacted with the community by, for example, quashing rumours that the service might be stopped for the public.

		When I first encountered Eurodicautom in the early nineties, I was warned it was a huge conglomeration of varying quality, not giving all languages.
		When we were heavily involved in the EU "POINTER" project (terminology) back in the mid-1990s, Eurodicautom was one of the resources we examined to see whether it could be repackaged and sold commercially, rather like a European counterpart to the Canadians.
		I suspect Eurodicautom's copyright attributions were more a matter of courtesy, rather than a strict legal requirement.

		There was talk recently of Eurodicautom being refurbished and possibly removed from public use, at which there was a great outcry among translators.
		EuroDicAutom may not give them the correct or most widely used translation, but no one ever gets fired for using the government's term database.
		For those who lack Catalan, el senyor Arener is expressing his gratitude for Eurodicautom, which he says is very useful both for the European community and for his own work as a translator between German and Catalan/Spanish.

		Although originally developed to meet the needs of in-house translators, Eurodicautom soon became useful to other Commission staff and was later adopted by linguists in other European institutions.
		Eurodicautom covers a broad spectrum of human knowledge, but is particularly rich in technical and specialised terminology (agriculture, telecommunications, transport, legislation, finance) related to EU policy.
		New data are added constantly by a team of Commission terminologists, supported by technical staff, using a special program (Edictor) to process terminology obtained from Commission terminologists, translators, linguists from other European and international institutions, research centres, publishers, private experts, etc.

		The Eurodicautom is organized by terminology collections maintained by different terminology offices, and, like the Metathesaurus, links different terms together when they express the same, or nearly the same, concepts.
		The Eurodicautom is only available through a Web interface so we were not able to perform normalized string matches against it (according to an e-mail from J Vega J, official contact for questions and feedback about the Eurodicautom, 2001 Apr).
		This suggests that the DARE extensions of the Metathesaurus and Eurodicautom may be used to provide useful links from natural language consumer terms to natural language physician terms.

	Transblawg: Eurodicautom / IATE access restricted
		Eurodicautom, up to now the EU Commission’s multilingual terminology database, is no longer being updated.
		Eurodicautom was pretty awful: most of the EU terminology I need (mainly from directives, other legislation, white papers, reports, etc. in the banking and finance fields) wasn't in Eurodicautom in the first place, and most of the terms they took over from commercial dictionaries were simply wrong.
		I remember when I was first teaching terminology in the 1990s and we were told in a course that Eurodicautom was free - it couldn't be copyrighted because there had been no system of recording who contributed what, and in general the whole thing was a complete mess.

	eurodicautom: European Terminology Database
		When it was first set up in 1973 the development team drew upon the know-how and lexicographic material of two other tools available to Commission translators: Dicautom, a phrasal automatic dictionary launched in 1964, and Euroterm, a translation dictionary developed in 1962-68.
		The four original languages of Eurodicautom were Dutch, French, German and Italian, to which Danish and English were added in 1973, Greek in 1981, Portuguese and Spanish in 1986, and Finnish and Swedish in 1995.
		Entries are classified into 48 subject fields (ranging from medicine to public administration).

		So, the International Federation of Translators has assumed some actions to ask to clarify the policy that the Commission intends to follow regarding public access to Eurodicautom.

		We used folk medical terms from the Dictionary of American Regional English project to create exended versions of 3 controlled vocabulary resources: the Unified Medical Language System Metathesaurus, the Eurodicautom of the European Commission's Translation Service, and the European Commission Glossary of popular and technical medical terms.
		The Dictionary of American Regional English extension of the Metathesaurus provided coverage, either direct or indirect, of approximately 23% of the natural language consumer-term-physician-term pairs.
		The Dictionary of American Regional English extensions of the Metathesaurus and Eurodicautom should be investigated further for support of consumer entry vocabulary for diabetes.
