Eurojust is a new European Union body established in 2002 to enhance the effectiveness of the competent authorities within Member States when they are dealing with the investigation and prosecution of serious cross-border and organised crime.
Eurojust improves co-operation between the competent authorities of the Member States, in particular by facilitating the execution of international mutual legal assistance and the implementation of extradition requests.
Eurojust hosts meetings, with translation facilities, between investigators and prosecutors from different states dealing with individual cases and at a strategic level and specific types of criminality.

Eurojust will be a high level team of senior lawyers, magistrates, prosecutors, judges and other legal experts seconded from every EU country, working as a team in the same place, in the same building.
Eurojust, proposed by a special meeting of the European Council - heads of state and of government of every state in the EU - in Tampere, Finland, in October 1999, is the next major step in ensuring that there are no safe havens for criminals and terrorists in the European Union.
EUROJUST should have the task of facilitating the proper coordination of national prosecuting authorities and of supporting criminal investigations in organised crime cases, notably based on Europol's analysis, as well as of co-operating closely with the European Judicial Network, in particular in order to simplify the execution of letters rogatory.

The number of cases dealt with by the Eurojust, the coordination agency of the European Union (EU) in judicial affairs, shot up to more than 300 in 2003, registering an annual increase of 50 percent.
The number of bilateral cases has risen to 222 in 2003 from the low level of 144 in the previous year, accounting for more than 70 percent of the all cases dealt with by the agency in the whole year of 2003.
Michael Kennedy, president of the Eurojust college, told reporters that the number of case referrals in the year 2004 will surely increase dramatically with the increasing mutual confidence of member states in the agency.
