Euronationalism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Euronationalism refers to a populist far right political movement which asserts a that Europe's culturally distinct nationalist movements have common interests, and asserts the acceptance of their local views within a wider audience.
A mirror of the Eurocommunism of the 1970s, Euronationalism represents a political strategy used by far right parties to win votes by appealing to a broader interest, thereby underplaying their radicalism and aiming for a more respectable image.
In the east these parties often include many ex-communists and have a nationalist veneer; they fear their neighbours’ territorial ambitions, and are often strongly anti-American and anti-Semitic.

 Euronationalism
Euronationalism is the process of bringing far right parties to mainstream respectability.
A mirror of the Eurocommunism of the 1970s, this is a strategy used by far right parties to start winning elections by underplaying their radicalism and aim for a more respectable image.
However this is mostly propaganda, as the regular marches against the FPO in Vienna, and the fact that VB is banned from entering government anywhere in Belgium testify.

They were right about the BNP and elections but they have been massively wide of the mark with their arguement that the battle for the streets had been won.
A trip to East Lancs would confirm that the old fashioned street boot boy British fascism has hardly been eclipsed by Griffin's "Euronationalism" indeed the race war strategists have NEVER had better success than they are having now.
There is an undeclared, unintentional, twin-track strategy with the NF and C18 stirring the shit on the streets and BNP reaping the rewards in elections.

Comrade Benn said that renewed internationalism, not a new ‘Euronationalism’, was the antidote to US aggression.
However, these sentiments were tied to the need to respect “international law” and a defence of the UN system - illusions in bourgeois legalism we have come to expect from the veteran socialist campaigner.

Since his election, Griffin has tried to transform the BNP into a "mainstream" political party through a policy of Euronationalism, copying tactics from European politicians such as Jorg Haider and Jean-Marie Le Pen.
Griffin has had his share of detractors though.

Of both kinds: traditional state-based, and new Euronationalism, which it is hoped, will wipe out the old kind responsible for so many horrors out.
I get annoyed by this view on euronationalism because as i've said before, europe is a place that has had much turmoil in the past, but is a place that is trying to put that behind it and move forward and become more unified.
Being utterly disdainful of another, though is: and this is Euronationalism at it's heart.

I am especially interested in what you all think of the BNP's process of Euronationalism (populist tactics) which have involved dropping core policies.
I appreciate that it is always necessary to be populist, but has it gone too far, especially given the internal division it causes?

Like Tony Blair, Gerhardt Schroeder, the German Chancellor, proclaimed several years ago that “national sovereignty in foreign and security policy will soon prove itself to be a product of the imagination.” But Jean Monnet, the founder of European Community, was a lot more honest.
He wrote that the EC would “compel nations to fuse their sovereignty into that of a single European state.” In spite of all evasions and denials, Euronationalism is on the march.
The obvious model is Otto von Bismarck, who united the fractious German states under the first Reich in 1870.

When France and Germany (full of Euronationalism and determined to create an anti-American block) opposed the USA's plan to remove Saddam Hussein, they caused the first major split in the history of the European Union, with Eastern-European countries, Britain, Italy, Holland, Spain and Denmark siding with the USA.
It was Chirac's attempt to paint the European Union as an alternative leader of the West that started the period of great instability (that is now, ironically, causing the collapse of the very Chirac regime that started it).
Part of it is euronationalism: the founders of the European Union are teaching younger generations to love Europe, and, inevitably, they have to paint it as a better alternative to the USA.

This would be of more serious concern if Nazi groups weren't marginalized by default due to the stigma inherent to their obviously emotionally and historically sensitive politics.
However, a new movement has emerged recently in the form of Euronationalism, wherein neo-Fascists and neo-Nazis seek (often quite successfully) to appear more mainstream and less obviously fascist in order to gain public support while stirring up prejudice, often against Muslims and non-white asylum seekers, instead of against Jews directly.
This has caused a great deal of controversy, as many anti-racists maintain that these movements are simply deceptions, cleverly designed to fool the uninformed.

Pragmatic national economic motives (themselves an important force for unilingualism) work side by side with internationalism and "Euronationalism", which itself may be inspired by romantic visions of past glory, isolationist longings for self-definition or neo-colonialist determination to hold on to as large a slice of the world pie as possible.
