Europa (moon) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although the name "Europa" was suggested by Simon Marius soon after its discovery, this name and the names of the other Galilean satellites fell out of favor for a considerable time, and was not revived in common use until the mid-20th century.
Europa is somewhat similar in bulk composition to the terrestrial planets, being primarily composed of silicate rock.
The temperature on the surface of Europa is 110 K at the equator and only 50 K at the poles, however, so the surface water ice is as hard as rock.

Europa (mythology) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Europa (Greek Ευρώπη) was a Levantine woman in Greek mythology, from whom the name of the continent Europe was ultimately taken.
The mythical Europa cannot be separated from the mythology of the sacred bull, which had been worshipped in the Levant.
His picturesque details belong to anecdote and fable: in all the depictions, whether she straddles the bull, as in archaic vase-paintings or the ruined metope fragment from Sikyon, or sits gracefully sidesaddle in a mosaic from North Africa, there is no trace of fear.

The rock layer of Europa (drawn to correct relative scale) is in turn surrounded by a shell of water in ice or liquid form (shown in blue and white and drawn to the correct relative scale).
Europa's water should have frozen long ago, but warming could be occurring due to the tidal tug of war with Jupiter and neighboring moons.

 Europa, the Phoenician Princess
Overwhelmed by love for Europa, Zeus transformed himself into the form of a magnificent white bull and appeared in the sea shore where Europa was playing with her maidens.
Europa became the first queen of Crete and had by Zeus three sons: King Minos of Crete, King Rhadamanthus of the Cyclades Islands, and, according to some legends, Prince Sarpedon of Lycia.
However, some say that the Bull who carried Europa was the same Cretan Bull that Heracles enjoined in one of his labours, which in turn could be the same Bull, that was sent by Poseidon to King Minos of Crete, and that later, consorting with the king's wife Pasiphae, became the progenitor of the Minotaur.

 Possibility of Life on Europa
Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter, appears to be one of the few places that we might find extraterrestrial life in our solar system (the others being Mars and Titan, a moon of Saturn).
If there is life on Europa, it will exist in an ice covered ocean and could cluster around hot springs in the ocean floor and resemble life forms known to exist under similar conditions on Earth.
The idea that Europa and other ice-covered bodies in our solar system might possess an ocean of liquid water under a crust of ice may have first been proposed by John S. Lewis in his paper Satellites of the Outer Planets: Their Physical and Chemical Nature (which appeared in Icarus,  vol.15, 1971).

SPACE.com -- Magnetic Fields and Water on Europa
Theoretical models that look at the behavior of Europas interior over time suggest that its possible that convection would quickly transport all the heat out of a liquid water layer and cause it to freeze solid, but its also possible that a liquid layer could be sustained over geological time.
For example, the data for Europa cannot be explained by localized pockets of salty water, and instead require a nearly complete spherical shell of liquid water.
The data are also not consistent with a field induced in Europa's ionosphere; the ionosphere is too tenuous to support the electrical currents needed to explain the strength of the field.
