The first incarnation of the band was named Force and came together on the year of 1979, in Upplands Väsby, Stockholm, and was integrated by vocalist and keyboardist Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum, bassist Peter Olsson and drummer Tony Reno.
The band sent several demos to record companies, but were told that in order to be published they had to cut their hair and sing in Swedish.
Europe recently finished up a world tour and is planning to record a new album, which is expected to hit the market in 2006.

Europe is a hard rock/heavy metal band that formed in Stockholm, Sweden, in the early 1980s.
The band was originally known as Force, and consisted of Peter Olsson on bass, John Norum on guitar, Tony Reno on drums, and Joey Tempest on lead vocals/guitar.

Europe's compositions and arrangements of familiar tunes were played with a jazz twist long before the "Jazz Age." His style was between the syncopated beat of ragtime and the syncopated improvisation of jazz.
Europe was a born organizer, helping to found a fl theatrical fraternity known humorously as ``The Frogs'' and then, in 1910, the famous Clef Club, the first union of African-American musicians.
Europe, like Handy, his near-contemporary, hoped to mold a fl concert music, drawing on 19th-century European roots, that would ``uplift his race.'' Although elements of ragtime and jazz crept into his music, he favored the sentimental parlor style of playing and singing that was the rage in late Victorian days.

After returning to the USA in 1919 he embarked on a triumphant tour of the nation and was hailed everywhere for his "gorgeous racket of syncopation and jazzing," but he died during the course of the tour.
Although the few extant recordings of Europe's compositions reflect the ragtime style that was prevalent at the time, contemporary descriptions of his band's performance style indicate that he stood at least, on the threshold of jazz, this is confirmed by his recording of Memphis Blues.
