Prior to its adoption in plenary, the Green Group made another attempt to hijack the proposal - which is aimed at enhancing the environmental effectiveness of noise charges levied at airports by ensuring the use of common classification criteria based on the noise performance of aircraft.
These amendments, which posed a serious threat to the operation of Europe’s airports by advocating the establishment of EU environmental noise standards, were once again rejected.
As the European Parliament conducted its First Reading, ACI EUROPE reminded the Members of the Environment Committee that similar amendments proposed by the Green Group last year during the ratification of the environmental noise Directive had already been discarded by the Parliament.

The whole of the EDD Group had done even better, employing over fifty group staff yet, when it came to the Conservatives within the 267-member EPP, with more than two times the number of MEPs than the entire EDD group, their dedicated group staff amounted to a meagre seven.
With the deposition of IDS and his replacement by Howard, however, the plan for a new grouping was kicked into touch, with a paper thin charade arranged to "legitimise" the continued Conservative membership of the EPP, by pretending that, somehow, the MEPs were "associated" though a sub-grouping known as EPP-ED.
Even Mark Mardell, the Beeb's Europe editor, thought that, tactically it was a "brilliant move" by Cameron and when David Davis refused to follow suit, many of the Eurosceptic MEPs – not least Daniel Hannan - lined up behind Cameron.

 PRESS CONFERENCE BY EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
Ulla Sandbaek, a Danish national and member of Europe of Democracies and Diversities, said that one could not liberate the Iraqi people by killing them.  In that regard, she insisted that sanctions were harmful and, therefore, had to be lifted.  Expressing gratitude to the United States for Europe’s liberation
after the Second World War, she contrasted that historical episode with the present one in Iraq.  Europe, unlike Iraq, had already had a democratic history.  In the Iraqi context, democracy would have to be nurtured in a manner that would not be possible in a warlike setting.
de Rossa added that, whereas Europe supported multilateral approaches, the United States seemed inclined to act unilaterally.  In that context, he called for a partnership of equals between the United States and Europe, as opposed to the United States desire to be “the boss”.
