 Public affairs
Public affairs is a catch-all term that includes public policy as well as public administration, both of which are closely related to and draw upon the fields of political science as well as economics.
Public policy discussions are generally and consciously partisan, and we assume that participants in public policy discussion have a specific point of view which they seek to advance in the discussion.
Public affairs can be defined as "the management of institutional relations at a profit" (Jeremy Kane, co-founder of EPPA, pan-European public affairs advisers).

Estimating the full extent of the environmental damages caused by exotic species and the number of species extinctions they have caused is difficult because little is known about the estimated 750,000 species in the United States, half of which have not even been described (Raven and Johnson 1992).
The total costs of endangered species recovery efforts, environmental planning related to snake containment on Guam and other programs directly stemming from the snake's invasion of Guam reach more than $1 million per year; in addition, up to $2 million per year is invested in research to control this serious pest.
We hope that this environmental and economic assessment will advance the argument that investments made now to prevent future introductions will be returned many times over in the preservation of natural ecosystems, diminished losses to agriculture and forestry, and lessened threats to public health.

It was clear that the environmental studies-based science faculty members wished to enhance their understanding of the historical, cultural, economic, political, and international contexts in which scientists working on environmental problems must operate.
The next phase of the International Affairs Program’s development is to build new ties with the natural sciences to start up and enhance coursework in global environmental affairs, recognizing that in the "real world" science and policy and science and culture interact in dynamic ways for which our students must be prepared.
What it does lack is the funding to bring the International Affairs and Environmental Studies Programs to their next stage of development which is the intent of the proposed project: building bridges between scientists and nonscientists who teach or wish to teach global environmental affairs.
