Adder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most snakes called adders belong to the family Viperidae, more precisely to subfamily viperinae (by contrast to pit vipers).
An exception is the Australian Death adder, which despite its name is not a viperid at all, but rather a member of the cobra family, Elapidae.

The adder (Vipera berus) is one of six reptiles native to Britain.
The adder is vulnerable to habitat loss due to intensive agriculture, forestry and urban development, and there is evidence that the numbers of adders decreased throughout Britain in the 1960's and early 1970's, this decline being most severe in the south east of England.
The adder is able to colonise a variety of habitats ranging from open woodland, hedgerows, commons, heathland, moors and sand dunes, to damp.

Although the adder has traditionally a relatively large national range, the species' local population sizes and dynamics, as well as factors influencing its local existence, or those contributing to the fitness of individuals, are almost completely unknown.
In Finland, adders are found historically in rather diverse habitats, including intact forests and those in industrial use, peat swamps, seashores and rocky habitats, among others, as well as in environments under anthropogenic pressure such as fields, parks, and yards.
Currently, adder populations are likely to be negatively affected by habitat loss, habitat fragmentation and degradation, as well as human persecution (animals are being killed routinely at encounter).
