TODAY’S LETTER: A “European American” Writes to Peter Brimelow; He Responds
In many ways, it doesn't matter what we adults think, it is the children who suffer intensely in schools, on playgrounds, aboard school buses, and on the sidewalk when they are challenged about their race and cultures.
By keeping to the "we're just Americans" position, you are not providing literature, ideas, and firm-footedness to our offspring in their daily wars - and they are embroiled in daily wars.
I do worry, though, that in retreating into an ethnic interest group, the Americans who created the republic are conceding the ideal — that Americans should be made in their image, morally and culturally if not genetically.

Ethnicity and Race: Ethnic Identification Process
Even European immigrants, such as the Irish in the 19th century, were commonly portrayed in the press as being dirty, stupid, alcoholic, and violent.
In North American middle class "white" families today, it is not uncommon for teenagers to feel a lack of ethnic identity.
This along with revised American history that emphasizes the unfairness of "whites" in their interactions with others leads many European American youths to have a somewhat negative image of their ethnicity and of themselves.

 INTERRACIAL VOICE - Guest Editorial
These peoples, while genetically somewhat similar to Europeans, are obviously very different culturally, so lumping them together with "Whites" under the heading "Caucasian" would probably create even more confusion than there already is in the area of racial classification.
Of course English is the United States' official language and the mother tongue of most Americans, and of all the European nations, England (or Britain, so to speak) is undoubtedly that which has had the most influence on American culture.
I recognize the limitations in referring to all Americans with ancestral ties to Europe as "European-American." For instance, it might be pushing it a bit to call a Filipino-American with one great-grandparent from Spain "European." The Philippines is a Westernized, not a Western, country; it belongs in the Asian rather than European cultural sphere.
